From a truck to a Jeep...

Has anyone made the switch? Any regrets? Especially regarding space for hunting and fishing stuff?

I did and I do miss my truck. I make it work for gear though during hunting season.
I just miss having a truck bed at times

I just went the other way miss my jeep in the tight spots and hitting the ORV parks but have loved having a bigger vehicle.

I started with just the Jeep before my first truck. Loved it but it was very tight for gear as it was a two door. You can supplement it with a hitch haul or carry rack but that only goes so far. Might be better with four door.
I like the bed of my truck a lot. I won't go back for hunting or carrying stuff. But I will always be craving a jeep for trail riding.

My buddy is doing the opposite as we speak

I did. I loved having the jeep, but missed the power of the truck and the extra room. Ideally I'd like to have a truck/SUV and then the jeep for the weekends and joy riding.
ETA: I have a 4runner now and I find it's the best of both worlds. At least for what I need and not being able to have 2 vehicles.

My main concern is fitting a dog crate and decoys in without completely destroying the interior. I'm thinking with a four door though that I could lay the seats down and have plenty of room...

I have one of each and would miss whichever I got rid of.

2 door. In the winter (hunting season) I take out by back seat and put on the hard top. This opens up a lot of room for gear that is secure and easy to get to.
However last season I just left my soft top on for most of the season and did ok as well.

Not sure if I could fit all my hunting stuff in a jeep. Maybe a 4 door
3 sillosock bags
4 layouts
Guns
Shell bags

I swear I just saw my old jeep for sale. Stopped and looked at it. If it aint it's just like it. Bought it from a dealers son who sold jeeps back in the 70's/80's. CJ-7. Wouldn't mind having one to play with, but have to have my truck. It was a pussy machine.

Yes, if you are going to switch at least get a four door.
I now have both though, so all is better

You will definitely need a 4-door to fit a crate.
Your next decision will be the top.
Hard tops are difficult (cumbersome) to remove by yourself. And, take it from someone who's made this mistake, don't even think about trying to do it with the help of your SO, unless you're the kind of guy who enjoys having his fingers smashed and property damaged in route to a big ole argument
The soft tops can be retracted easily by one person. But, they're loud on the interstate/highway, and they pretty much all leak EVENTUALLY.

I put a hoist in the garage.

That'll work, too.

I love option 3, but that would probably be a stretch for me right now. Thanks for all of the advice though, think i'm gonna go for it. Figure now is the time to make a questionable decision, before I have kids and all that

You can get into a decent "play around" jeep for $5k-$7k. If you buy something decent and don't desteoy it, you should be able to unload it for near what you paid if you ever need to cash out. Note: it helps to want to work on it yourself.

I'm thinking of a Tacoma. Seems to be a good compromise.

They make convertible tacomas now? How is that a compromise?
Compromise would be something like an 80's K5. You can just remove the backseat altogether and have a bed. You can take the top off when you want or spray the tub with bedliner, get some waterproof seatcovers and leave the top off for good. With the top off and the windows rolled up, you can drive a K5 in the rain and not get wet. You can find one for under 10k in really good shape. You also get that 350 power under the hood.
I use my jeep to haul all my hunting stuff, ice chests, guns, etc. I have a roof rack to carry anything that won't fit in the cab and a 7 hole rod holder on the front bumper. I have a small s-10 to use if I don't feel like pulling a trailer for hardware/lumber trips.
