Tried a topwater frog lure for the first time yesterday. It was different but a lot of fun

Anyone else like it or have any tips

I used to like fishing a hollow body frog until I tried a ribbit frog. Now a ribbit frog is my go to top water bait. I find I catch way more fish on it. If you're using a hollow body, give the ribbit a try. Only thing I don't like about the ribbit is when you throw it in scum, it will pick some up when it lands which is annoying. And it doesn't work as well in lillies but it's still fishable in them.

I have a lot more luck when I can pitch it onto some lilly pads, base of cypress tree or grass. Early morning black/dark. If it stays overcast keep fishing dark. Sun comes out good go light colored if the top water bite is still there.

Big big fan of the black buzz baits also.

I'm the exact opposite. I LOVE throwing hollow body frogs, and have probably caught more fish this year on one than any other bait in my tackle box.

Tips I would give for throwing them: trim the legs to about 3-1/2 or 4 inches and put a worm rattle inside them if they don't come with one. And make sure you are walking it! This is the most important thing with hollow bodies, if you're not walking it you won't get near as many strikes.

Exactly THIS!!

Also, try & spread the hooks out a little so they run along the side of the frog instead of on top. It will remain weedless but will be easier set the hook.

Use 50# or heavier braided line - will definitely increase your hook/catch ratio - with either hollow body or ribbit type

I usually do a thousand 1, thousand 2 and then set.

Agree with the 50#+ braid. High speed reel preferable on a 7' heavy rod. I throw both hollow body and ribbit type frogs.

But my favorite:
FTW

ETA: I either use black or melon red pearl.

Pillage I think I might try out that Top Toad.

I am always on the fence about throwing a hollow body vs a buzz toad and it looks like that takes care of both presentations

Eta: Does it walk at all?

I usually just buzz it. Never tried walking it. What I like is that if something strikes at it but misses, I'll just let it sit for a second before I start reeling again. That sometimes triggers a second reaction. But the plopping sound the feet make coming through the water seems to drive them crazy.

ETA: I imagine you could walk it. Don't think the paddle feet would limit that ability too much.

I've never tried. I'll take your word for it. The only thing I walk is poppers, spooks, and weightless flukes.
