Decided not to trade my shotgun and check out a local pawn shop. Low and behold, there she was. A 1966 model Marlin 336...

Didn't buy it cause I wanted to ask how you guys typically talk a seller down in price. It's a pawn shop so it can't be too hard. The amount you can talk down to is the kicker. How would you guys approach it?

I'd shoot it before buying if possible. that's all I got, I don't usually deal in pawn shops.
Also I'd check his prices on Gunbroker to see if he's not overly high. GB prices are pretty high in my experience.

Like buying anything really. If you can afford to bring cash, bring it.

More importantly, always be prepared to walk. Go back in a week or two and I bet its still there. Its hunting season so I bet their inventory is moving pretty slow. Everyone already bought a gun already.

Is $320 a lot for a gun that's 50 years old.

320 bucks is not much money for any functioning firearm of any age. if you like it, buy it

if it was mint (nearly new or unfired) it would go for around 500- 600

If he's asking $320 at a pawn shop, chances are he paid around $75 for it. Mine brand new was like $300 out the door 15 years ago. I wouldn't even know how to value an old one. Pawn shop guys watch Pawn Stars. Offer him $200 and settle for $250

This is a brand new 336 available for 500.00 ish. I don't really like pawn shop guns. Normally very worn, poorly cared for, and over priced.

Academy has brand new 336's for $350ish.

I would not pay $320 for a gun that old, but $250 sounds fair if it's in good shape. Otherwise, i'd go buy me a new one.

Sorry, $389 at academy.

I'd start at 150$ and go up to 200$ tops. Like someone said above, he paid $75 for it and will still be doubling his money. Set a fixed point and be willing to pretend to walkout if they don't meet it. Give us an update later to tell us how it went. Good luck.

Places like Bass Pro will sell them even cheaper over the next several weeks.

Something to keep in mind is that those older Marlins are considered to be better made than the models made after Remington took over (Remlins). Remington-made Marlins had a lot of teething issues because Marlin never made detailed engineering drawings of their rifles, they relied on machinists who knew the equipment and the rifle with years and years of experience. Remington had to make the drawings and setup new equipment to get the issues resolved. The newer Remlins are fine shooters but the stigma still exists and they don't have the classic details of the older rifles.

I don't have any pawn shop experience, but I would certainly lowball. That can't be a high demand item, there's no way people are beating down the door to buy 30-30s. It's a buyers market.

I went in with $280 cash. I asked what the best he could do and he said $300 out the door. I didn't even make my offer. I just left. I did ask him to take my number if it doesn't sell in a few weeks to call me.

I'd try to talk him down, but I'd still buy that gun over a new remlin if the price is right.
