I knew meauxjeaux is one and maybe he can chime in.

I try to cycle my 4 WD pretty often to work the mechanisms...well I did it today in prep for next week and damn thing wouldn't shift. After several attempts and checking fuses i was able to get it enhanced. It shifted hard though. Then it wouldn't shift out. If I kill the truck and restart it seems to drop out easier. Not to mention is sounds unhappy when I turn ( however it is on dry pavement as of now). Any place I should start? The relay cycles several times until the shift into 4wd is complete. Then it won't disengage.

112000 miles. Auto. Super crew. Fx4.

Thanks! I'm going to look for vacuum leaks. I'm wondering if the solenoid is going bad

Haha first one I've owned... its funny because I'll my old gm 350s had wayyyy more miles on them and I abused the 4wd and never worked on them. Lol

Figured out the 4wd actuator was sticking. Disassembled and greased. Much smoother now. You guys with these trucks the solenoids have a habit of water infiltration then busting on the first freeze.

I am curious why my pickup would idle rough in 4wd. Might indicate a vacuum leak.

That's normal. You shouldn't be turning with 4wd engaged in concrete

Yep the others I've owned were unhappy as well. I just don't want to test the 4wd in my front yard :). Everything looks good

I was going to suggest the actuator. I believe it is something common on them

Vacuum actuators passenger side firewall they can crack & check the hoses you can swap out the hubs to a mechanical hub you won't have to worry About this again
