My wife's boss would like to take a trip down to the Gulf Coast to fish for reds. He's a mountain guy / purist so he will be fly fishing. His wife will be going with him, so he's also looking for somewhere that's within driving distance to cabins or other lodging and maybe a decent meal. Any suggestions? I told him Grand Isle off the top of my head, but was thinking someone here may have more specific recommendations. Maybe Bay St. Louis? Doesn't have to be exclusive to LA.

Is he looking for a guide or is he going to do it himself?

Delacroix/Hopedale. Captain Tristian Diare(sp?) Higher Education Charters. He'll have a blast with those bull reds in the marsh. 1hr from nola.

EDIT:::he can set the whole thing up @ Uptown Angler. Just call and ask to book a full or 1/2 day with Cptn. Tristan. He might be booked solid, but it's worth checking.

probably do it himself.

Eta: although I don't think he's opposed to a guide.

Try Capt. Howard Cuevas from Dulac. Good buddy of mine and he lives for fly fishing reds. 225-978-5436

I was with him over thanksgiving and he's been doing well. has a great push pole setup.

Use Miles Larose or Greg Dini. These guys are the tip of the spear in Gulf Coast fly fishing right now.

Definitely tell him to get a guide.
Any blowhard can drive down to Grand Isle and look for reds to catch on the fly but they will really sell the opportunity short without a guide (especially if the conditions are rough, the guides will know where to seek shelter from the wind).
There's just too much open water/area to cover for someone from out of state.

Check out the guides mentioned...

If you don't know any guides, I'd start with uptown angler in NOLA

Highly recommend he not try to do this himself in South Louisiana for the first time. The money he'll spend renting a boat (not equiped for fly fishing) and the amount of frustration he'll get trying to figure things out, while getting stuck in the highly unusual (to him) shallow marshes of south Louisiana is not worth it. He is not prepared for what he will see down here. Also, as others have stated, 4 and 5 wt rods will be like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

My recommendation for him is Hopedale because he’s bringing his wife and it’s a short distance from NOLA. Get a guide out that operates of there, Orvis in Baton Rouge will set you up with Capt. Lucas Bisset , who works at that store and guides out of Hopedale, he comes HIGHLY recommended.

I looked at the weather this weekend and it will be pretty good for fly/sight fishing saturday afternoon/ sunday. So i will try my luck out in cocodrie and stay at the camp an hopefully get lucky. I think i will have to head towards dulace area to find clean enough water, but we will see
