Anyone have a recommendation for a good fishing charter in Costa Rica? Going to be staying in Tamarindo in the Guanacaste region the first week of May and would like to catch a few fish.

Not sure where exactly that is, but we were in Costa Rica 2 weeks ago for my bachelor party and used Costa Rica Dreams out of Los Suenos. Very nice boat, didn't catch any billfish but they put us on all the yellowfin we wanted to catch.

the main marinas are pez vela in Quepos and los suenos in Jaco

These are far south. In tamarindo there is a pretty large fleet anchored off the beach. They can probably pick you up on the beach in a panga and bring you to the big boat.

I'm sure you can get a good rec by calling the tour planner at the tamarindo diria.

maverick sportfish out of Los suenos is probably the best chance at billfish

If you just want nearshore fishing you can negotiate a deal while down there. Make sure they take the time to catch live bait.

There are snook and other fish on the beaches near rivers, it's fun to bring a small rodnreel for that. Don't expect to buy one there as you will pay 100 bucks for a zebco.

This is what I did when I fished in the Gulf of Papagayo. Found a guy at the resort setting up excursions and ended up buying a trip through him. Was around $250 for a 6 hour "inshore" type trip.

Ended up on a boat with a captain and 2 hands that spoke almost no English and had an amazing time. We caught bait fish with a hand spool and spoon type lure and that was a lot of fun too. After catching the bait (took about 30 minutes), we fished in about 150 feet of water about 400 yards from the beach. Caught several black fin Tuna, 2 Jacks and a big arse Rooster.

That is an amazing part of the world man. Have fun.

I fished about an hour and a half north of Tamarindo, if you can't find anything in that area I can put you in touch with a guy.

Damn, dude, how did yall manage that? We have fished out of Los Suenos for three years now out of that marina and have never come in with fewer than 10 billfish in a day. Did the weather get yall? We've also never managed to find a yellowfin despite trying though.

ETA: Not a criticism of your efforts, just know that the sails are thick from January through at least May

Did this in tamarindo a few years ago. Unfortunately, I think our captain retired, but we caught Sailfish, big Mahi, and my dad caught a 400lb Blue Marlin. Tamarindo is unique for sure. Not a real nice resort town but you get the local vibe and everything is authentic. Would like to head down to Jaco for my next trip. We were down in February during the dry season and the weather was awesome for fishing.

Here's a shot from our hotel bar showing how the boats are set up offshore because of the rocky beaches

Conditions were good, they just weren't biting. Only one boat in the marina when we pulled in had hooked up with a sailfish. We trolled for a few hours looking for them and finally our captain gave us the option to go catch tuna or keep trolling. We went with the tuna. It was still a kickass time.

Used Costa Rica Dreams in January. Bill fish didn't work out. Caught some yellow fin. Hell, coulda filled the boat up with yellow fin. There was a bill fish tournament at los sue Os and they were catching bill fish. Leads me to believe it was a problem with our charter service. Still had a great time.

Sometimes certain boats just don't raise billfish on certain days. I used to fish professionally down in Costa and saw this happen many times. Boats fishing in the exact same area using the exact same spread/speed.

Los Suenos

My best friend's family has a place in there. They always catch fish when they go. I was only able to go once and we caught lots of sails and some dolphin.

Yeah if/when I go back not on a guys trip I would definitely stay there versus Jaco. The golf course they have on site there is pretty amazing as well.
