i use improved clinch for anything freshwater. it is just faster. but when big fish are on the line, i dont trust it, even though i have used it in a pinch.

Saltwater is a different ball game. I'm not sure what the actual knot is called but circle hooks get something similar to a snell that draws the point straight up like polar pop said. I've seen bimini's tied but I've never been a party to much billfishing, I go uni to uni.

Palomar for most.
Loop knot for hard top water baits

Rebeck if you have a bare hook.
Palomar for everything else.

San Diego jam knot. Except with braid.
But add in a loop knot for topwater or live baits that you're live-lining.

I was just looking for a knot that wont snap my line on hooksets. That may not even be the issue. I always wet my line when i cinch it down, but i still get breaks every now and then with 20lb mono or lighter. I use 30 now with no problem, but that is some thick mono that im not really crazy about. And no, I hate braid for flipping. I use clear/blue/flourecent Stren because I like to watch my line for subtle bites. Just wish I could downsize a bit.

Are you actually finding a piece of the knot (little twists or otherwise) when it comes back broken, or is it just straight line?

I have been using the palomar whenever i can and really like that knot. Up until a couple years ago i only used the improved clinch. If i have the time i will snell leaders and have them stored ready to go.

I use uni-knots for everything with zero issues. Only change is when using braid, run the line through the eye twice before starting the twists.
This.
I got a hook snagged on a stump in deep water once. Using 15 lbs fluorocarbon line and a #3 worm hook. I pulled on in trying to just pop the line, but broke the hook instead. Let's just say I gained a lot of confidence in that line and the uni knot that day.
Only exception is for walking baits. I will use a loop knot. And a snell knot when punching with a big flipping hook.

Loop knots on hollow bodied frogs?
Im going to have to try the loop knot, I look like Im dragging the dog when I attempt it.

I still use the uni on frogs. But poppers and spooks I use the rapala loop knot.
ETA: Mainly because I use braid with frogs.

I have pulled a uni tight with a loop and had it hold. I use that for Rapalas.

It's pretty similar actually.

multiple strength tests on various lines have proven there is indeed a difference and it does matter what you use.
