Fishing in Pensacola(bay)
Posted by Babewinkelman on 7/19/16 at 7:22 pm10
We are going to take a long weekend trip to Pensacola, staying at wife's relatives house. They live on the bay and have a pier that goes out about 50 yards. My mother in law will be there, so I plan on drinking beer and fishing off the pier to avoid altercations. What bait and setup would any of yall recommend to pass a good time? Thanks

To drink beer and pass a good time, I would use cut bait for reds or maybe a shark. Market shrimp will probably catch you a million pinfish and whatever else may be in the area.

Sound view trail?

hook live shrimp through their horns (ears), you'll catch all kinds of things in that bay. I have caught mostly speckled trout and red fish, but i have also caught little sharks and rays- enjoy!

would it be a good idea to bring a cast net?

Do they have any lights on the end of the pier? If so, fish those.

Fishing has been tough inshore in that part of the world. Water is too damn hot. Reds can be caught but the speck bite has slowed to a crawl. Sheepshead and flounder are always a possibility around docks. Shrimp or crabs will work for both. Drop a shrimp on the bottom and jig it down the length of the pier slowly. When you get to the end, go back on the other side. Caught many flounder this way

Not sure if you have kids that are old enough to fish, but if so set them up with a brim type rig (zebco rod and reel, floater, split shot, and #6 hook) with shrimp and they'll catch pin fish all day next to that pier. Did this last summer and the kids had a blast.

May do that, then use the pin fish for something bigger!

Now you are thinking!

I cut the pin fish in chunks and use the pieces for bigger fish. I have also caught fish on whole pin fish.

Whole, live pinfish is top notch bait both inshore and offshore. They're a lot heartier than finger mullet and tend to struggle more on the hook. I've had average size specks eat big pinfish.
And if you catch a pigfish, which look like a hybrid between a pinfish and a pumpkinseed bream, please God don't cut it up. Fish him live. They grunt like hell when they're hooked and predators can't stand it

What everyone else said and try using clear line instead of the green off color most people use here. Water is normally pretty dang clear over there unlike our state waters. Dead shrimp on a drop shot rig off any pier or dock with some water moving works well. We fish around Ono island and the fishing pier at Orange Beach most vacations and will catch 15 different species of fish normally.

I live here and riseup is right about the water temp. Fishing has been rough as of late for me(haven't done a lot tbh) and for the guys I have talked to that do fish often. Check out the pensacola fishing forum, inshore reports. Good luck & hope you have a good time!

Thanks guys. Got in yesterday afternoon. Kids had a blast. rigged them up with market shrimp on bream rig. Caught pin fish, pig fish, and even puffer fish until they lost interest. There are some fat arse pin fish here, they crap all over! Wenter out out this morning, rigged a drop shot, cut gulp shrimp in small chunks, wore them out again
