Fishing in Jaco Costa Rico

Going this week and my son and I would like to catch some sailfish but not break the bank doing it. Also, should I bring my travel road and some lures (Which ones if so) and try to catch some fish surf casting or from a kayak? We are staying at the Los Suenos Marriott if that helps.
Also, what is best way to get a good small boat or a share at the Marina. Just two of us and can't justify 1500 bucks for a 40 footer unless I bring my wife and daughter. (Who will want to go back in after an hour and thus defeat the whole thing)
Thanks

we've used costa rica dreams before. overall good experience.
can't really help you on the surf fishing, but the waves at jaco beach can get to 10ft + when the tide changes.

This is a great time of the year for the sailfish if you do decide to go out. Don't get fixated on a fancy arse boat, all of the guys can fish and you will enjoy it on any boat you go on. I was in Tamarindo a few years ago on an old 32' sport fisher and watched my dad catch a 350lb blue marlin. Nothing fancy about the boat, but the Cpt was cool and we had a good time.

highly recommend Sea Fly out of Los Suenos. Not sure of price though. I think I saw they were closing in on 1,000 sails caught & released since mid November.

Stayed a week in Jaco in February. Girlfriend's dad lives in a condo on the beach there...building next to the new casino being built.
We took a charter for $400 total for the day. Caught 2 sailfish and a Mahi. I'll post pictures tmrw.
Didn't even know you could take your own boat. I can get you some info from her dad if you're interrsted though.

I just got back two weeks ago. Also stayed in a house in Los Suenos. We used the Spanish Fly and the Sea Fly. It was absolutely absurd. We caught 80 something sailfish and a few marlin in 3 days of fishing. I totally hear you on not breaking the bank, but I considered it a trip of a lifetime and the best saltwater fishing trip I've ever done. If you can swing it, I highly recommend one of those boats. You will NOT be disappointed. Our slowest day was 13 sails and a bunch of mahi and wahoo. Not telling you to go into debt, but if you can find the means...do it.
As for surf fishing, try parking down by the marina, walk up past a Bank (literally, a $ bank, not THE bank) and up to those rocks. There are roosterfish near the rocks, but I know they are super selective on what they bite...I hear live bait is the way to go. Hell, the marina is full of decent tropical looking fish, but people are funny about fishing in the marina.
Go over to the Hooked Up bar above the Marina. Its kid friendly and is a great fishing bar. If you don't go with Maverick Sportfishing (they own the Spanish Fly, Sea Fly, and Super Fly), then ask around the bar there, maybe you can get a deal. Also, Jaco (the town just south of Suenos) is a little bit seedy. Wouldnt recommend taking the kids down there after....like 5 PM.
The beach in Jaco is cool though. The beach at Suenos is a little more tidal/not much crashing surf. If you decide to take a surfing lesson over in Jaco, take their advice and learn on the little waves. My experience involved telling the instructor to quit being a pussy, then spending the rest of the day not breathing a whole lot and being drug across the bottom of the ocean.
Its a real pretty place, man. You're gonna like it. Best fishing I've ever done.
...and they have a nightclub in the resort just for teenagers. Its not as much fun as it sounds and the management gives you the stink eye a lot.

Like Papa Pogey said, fish with one of the guys that looks shady and has a shite boat. Sounds bad but I'm serious. They can fish just as well and will save you 50%, especially if you came with cash.
don't be a stick in the mud tourist, live a little at the "other" marina.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was a full day charter with those guys?

Also, winds are 10-20 mph all week. That would mean 3-5 foot seas here. I am hoping that it doesn't there. Not even sure how to get a coastal marine forecast there.

Very cool dolphin pic.
OP, I'd be careful considering taking a "cheap" fishing trip, in a thirdworld country, on a POS boat. The seas are generally calm, but you can still sink.
If you get a chance, head over to Manuel Antonio national park. It's not too far from Jaco, and it's like they stock wildlife there. Lots of sloths, monkeys and other cool critters.
Also, if you are driving to Jaco from SJO, make sure you stop on the bridge (Rio Tarcoles) and check out the crocodiles. They are some of the largest in the world. I think only Australia has larger ones.

this shows 1-3 foot seas. I've never seen it overly rough there (fished there four times Jan-Mar time period). They are known for having calm seas.

Not sure. For 3 days fishing, 2 days goofing off/golf, 8 golfcarts for the week, a BADASS 10 Bedroom house with a pool, maids, and a chef, I think we paid 2650. Didnt include airfare, tips, booze, or groceries...or a few trips to the casino.
eta: 2650 each.
