What should I do for a temporary protection? I'm planning to build a little shed around it but haven't gotten around to it.

I'm assuming you are talking about a pump house for your water pump?

I used to put an old sleeping bag over mine.

I usually put a tarp over it and a lamp to produce some heat.

We used to get a bale of hay and spread it over it covered by a tarp.

When it was in a little shed we used just put a lamp on it.

I don't think it will get coldenough long enough to worry about it. However I would build something around it and get a plug that has a thermostat on it. Plug a few heat lamps into it and they will kick on automatically when below 35 degrees. That's what I do with mine.

until you can get something built, I would just throw a tarp or a sheet over it and put a light bulb inside...

Shouldn't be a problem at 31. It won't be < freezing long enough. Let your kitchen faucet dribble if your worried. I turn a 100 watt bulb on in my pump house during freezes.

For pipes to freeze, temps have to get below 28F for no less then 4-5 hours. Install two 100 watt lights and cover it with a tarp. Reason for two lights is just incase one burns out.

In my lifetime, I've only seen incandescent lights burn out when first switched on, never afterward. I just make sure mine is still on after I flip the switch and I know it will stay on all night. It's worked for 35 yrs.

I've stacked cender blocks completely around the pump with a piece of tin over it & have an electric heater beside it. Been through the last 2 winters without any issues
