Just got my first hand gun, next step will be getting a concealed carry and taking it to our farm to do lots of practice. Any particular class you suggest?

Grew up around guns so I know all the basics, but this will be the first time I keep a hand gun on me or in my car.

Any advice you think I need to know? My plan is (unless convinced otherwise) to mainly keep it in my car when I drive around Nola/BR for work. Smart? We have one that stays in the house, along with a shotgun.

PS. I am a female (try to contain yourselves) if that makes any difference for potential advice. TIA

I would suggest taking it to the farm for lots of practice before getting the concealed carry.

Other than that, congratulations.

Find you a good basic handgun class, it should take up an entire Saturday. You will shoot 250 rounds and learn how to shoot properly. Generally there is a debrief session at the end of a good class where you sit around and ask questions and talk with the instructors.

Oh and pics are needed to determine further course of action.

Thanks! Maybe I should first ask what all is involved in the concealed carry class?

And will definitely get comfortable with it before I enroll in one, don't want to be "that girl" in the class that knows nothing.

In my class there were two guys that had never held a gun, it blew me away that they were there to get the CC permit and knew nothing about guns.

My class was mostly class room learning law and regulations with shooting portion at the end to demonstrate you can handle it safely.

Get in touch with Dawg23 on here, if in or around Baton Rouge. Lots of board members have taken his Conceal Carry class. I think he might give a few private lessons as well.

Like others have said, focus on practice. Learn proper grip first and foremost.

Need to think about security in vehicle if not carrying with you. I don't trust the locks on the glove box or glove compartment.

Good luck!

Dawg, my mailing address is the same, will be waiting on the gift for the endorsement!

3 hours of "how to operate and fire a handgun" (zzzzzzzz)
3 hours of "where you can carry, and what happens if you shoot someone"
2 hours of shooting (if you have 12+ people in the class)

Most classes shoot at 16',10', and 6'
If you can land most of your rounds in the target at those distances, you'll pass.

Send in paperwork or file online. Wait 6 weeks for permit to come in.

The test, both written and shooting is so easy, that it is almost impossible to fail.

Do. Not. Carry. A. Gun. In. Your. Purse.

Always keep it on you. Sort of like you wished you could do with me.

Thanks, I guess I could have googled that. That sounds like a lot of sitting in a chair trying to pay attention... I'll have to find a lively instructor.

Get in touch with one of the companies listed in this thread and tell them what you're doing and what you're looking for. They are all more than willing to train new gun owners and CC'ers

No joke. It is all good info I am sure... but I feel like it could be learned with a lot less hours of time.
