First time flying with a firearm

It was a surprisingly easy and painless experience.
At the baggage drop I declared I had a firearm. They filled out an orange card I opened my case and stuck it inside. They escorted me back to a little room as they called a TSA agent to inspect my case. 5 minutes later im going through security.
At the destination I go to the claim area show my Id and pick up my firearm.
Simple as that. On my return flight to Atlanta I was flying on a one way ticket because that was cheaper then changing my flight. Even with a one way ticket I didn't get any extra TSA anal probing.
Finding and buying a hard case I wanted to use was a much more laborious and time consuming process. I didn't want to drop $100 on a case I would rarely use. I picked up a Rigid 22" waterproof tool case at Home Depot for $29. Doesn't look like I am carrying a firearm through the airport. Lots of room to stick extra stuff in there. This tool box.

Flying domestically is relatively pain free, provided the airport isn't swamped and there aren't 50 other hunters flying at the same time.
I can tell you from personal experience that flying with a firearm to Canada during duck season sucks a fat one.

Why'd you pay $29 when you linked they are $12?

Me and a buddy bought a good case years ago. It holds two guns. When we hunt together, we each put one gun in. Otherwise, whoever is traveling uses it.

I was told that as well. We just rent guns from the outfitter. The gun I rent is better than the one I own anyways...

Yes, it's painless. I got an extended screening for a cellphone battery but wheeling a few rifles around isn't a problem.
Pelican 1750 is the way to go for a case. Buy it right, buy it once. You have to close the case if you want to drive over it though.

I fly 3-4 times a week usually with a firearm (today I am in Los Angeles and fly out tomorrow - no gun). It is easier with SWA - I just grab my bag off the carousel and go at the destination.

It's definitely not as difficult as people would imagine, however, not all airports are equal so be sure to give yourself plenty of time if you're not familiar with a particular airport's process.
BTR - By far the easiest and least complicated checking process I've experienced. Fill out card, quick inspection, bag/case is checked
TUS - Second easiest I've experienced. Same process as BTR, but I had to wait 10 mins before going through security in case TSA had any issues with my case.
SFO - Far easier than I was expecting and it just felt weird walking through the San Fran airport with a gun case. I had to go to a separate area to check my gun but everyone was nice and it wasn't too inconvenient.
ATL - Far and away, the most cumbersome process I've ever had to go through to check a firearm. I had to go through a different line just to check my normal baggage because I was checking a firearm instead (of course no one told me that so I stood in the regular line and pissed away 15 mins). After I checked my bags at the special desk I then had to go to the TSA area and wait for those idiots to check everything. It took 20 mins because the two morons at TSA thought their non-work conversation was more important than my bag. Whole process took about 35 mins.
ETA: OP, I bought that exact same case when I couldn't find my old one and needed an emergency replacement

Does that case have TSA locks or can you pad lock it?

You can pad lock it. You don't want/need TSA locks for a firearm. I used two pad locks one on each clasp. The eariler link was just for pictures. I was looking for foam to go on the inside and that was a site I found that sold some pre-laser cut. I didn't have time to find foam so I just used two zippered padded cases to hold my pistols inside and stuffed some cloths in there so they wouldn't rattle around.

Last year I flew with a rifle and pistol for the first time. NOLA was easy, they just opened my case up and looked inside then threw an orange card in. In Spokane I was brought in a back room. The TSA agent told me not to open it and just wiped the outside of the case with some kind of cloth and said your good.I was surprised at how easy and painless it was.

He posted a link to the foam inserts, not the case. Likely unintentional.
