Looking to get into kayak fishing and thinking of taking my kayaks out for the first time this weekend. Was thinking of going down to Delacroix saturday. Any advice for a beginner? Also is there a better location to fish out of right now?

Be mindful of the weather. This is especially important for kayaks. Wear your pfd at all times. Keep your head on a swivel, make sure other boats see you. Bring as little as possible. Only what you need. Have fun.
As far as fishing Delacroix, someone else will have to chime in on that.

Pretty sure I'll be in Delacroix on Saturday in my yak

Pillage, thanks for the advice.
Reds, I have heard that Sweetwater is a good place to launch out of. Do you suggest going down there to launch?

Yep. Just paddle down the canal across from there and duck into the marsh wherever and you should find fish. Bring gold spoons and your favorite weedless swim bait and you will catch some reds.

If you see me feel free to say hey. I'll be in a white KC kayak probably with another buddy or two.

Be mindful of the tide and wind too, there's nothing worse than paddling out against current/wind, fishing and then paddling back against current/wind. Bring water. Good luck!

Ok, this is what I would do. Launch at Serignes. For one they only charge $5 to launch and it takes 2 minutes to paddle to bayou gentilly. Jack pissed me off when a friend tried to setup a yak tournament there. He now charges $10 and he flat out told me he charges more because kayak fisherman rarely buy live bait from him and they take up a trailer space. He stated he'd rather they launch somewhere else. I don't personally dislike him, but I'll never launch a yak there again and I gave Jack plenty business in the past.
In regards to fishing. Get a little ways away from terre boef. You can either hit gentilly or head the other way to lake leary area. I would hit leary. Less pressure, water is decent and plenty reds. Hard not to catch reds down there. Spoons, weedless baits, topwater is the ticket. Good luck

I was surprised at the $10 charge to launch my yak. Seemed pretty steep. And I parked my truck on the bayou side of the road where there isn't any room for trailers.
I guess it might be true that yakers don't buy as much live bait, but it's been my understanding that he has always had a problem getting bait in the past anyways.
Everyone knows that people have had their fair share of problems at Serignes, but it seems like they've gotten better over the years. I've heard nothing but good things about Sweetwater, but I don't feel like paying $10 to launch my yak. That's a shame when you're twice the price of the bait nazi.

Serignes as of late has done the right thing. Jacks just missing the boat. Another thing I noticed was his bathrooms are unkept and nasty. Serignes now has an air conditioned trailer as a bathroom.

Serignes > Sweetwater IMO. Usually less people and definitely more kayak friendly. I also second heading toward Lake Lery I did pretty good out there a couple of weeks ago just about a half mile from the launch. Much less boat traffic also.
