I'm looking to switch home insurers. A friend of mine is an agent and I just got a quite from her on firearms.

Homeowners would be $800 a year for my house. To insure my firearms would be another $800 a year. What he hell? That seems mighty steep to me.

Who does everyone use for firearm insurance? What kind of rates are you getting?

Had mine done at Farm Bureau a few years back and wanting to say I pay $1 insurance on every $100 I take out on a gun. Will have to check. I know it was very cheap.

Just buy an extra gun a year and keep them somewhere else as a hedge

That's much better. This is over double that.

I am guessing they scheduled them, which would also cover accidental damage.

What do you think you have in guns and accessories, new replacement cost. And what losses are you wanting protected against.

Sounds like they want way more than double unless you have a very exspensive collection. Basically mine works out that if I have a $1200.00 rifle the premium is $12.00 a year, a $350.00 pistol would be $3.50 a year, and so on. Sounds like they are trying to go in dry on you baw.

What does scheduling them mean?

I upped the contents to the maximum, 70% I'd the home value and that was less than $100 a year. That would cover them in a fire or other catastrophe.

Its a pretty good collection, and i I have a few of my dad's right now, he lost his adage in the flood.

Scheduling is where each gun is insured, usually no deductible, up to a set amount, that covers most losses including accidental damage or misplacing.

There is usually no specific limit on firearms and accessories on total losses, not theft. It's just your personal property maximum with a deductible.
F
Theft, you are going to usually have a specific limit on firearms and accessories plus a deductible. A lot of policies, it's $2500 limit.

Misplacing and accidental damage are not covered

You should be able to up your firearms theft limit at a fairly negligible cost. I recommend scheduling anything with particular high value though.

Eta, I am just assuming your agent friend did schedules, because of the cost.

You have very limited forearm coverage on a non endorsed HO3 policy, upping to 70% doesn't protect extra against firearms

Looks like I need to do some more research. We didn't talk about that at all and I'm not sure what she had pulled up.

Admittedly, she didn't know much about firearms, she doesn't deal with many of them. She said because the cost was so high.

Chad.

While it wouldn't protect against firearms, that extra money would allow me to replace them in case of a fire or something. That's how I understand it at least. I'm completely ignorant to how these things work.

I'll have to give them a call tomorrow. The other place capped it at 30k for $800.

Don't get this policy with Eastern Insurance. I had this policy and filed a claim due to theft of my handgun from my vehicle. They denied my claim even after proof of police report. I called a cancelled that policy immediately after they denied it.

Had it in the late 70's early 80's, it was cheap. They shite a brick when the renewal came up and I added 10 weapons. Capped me at that point.

Why was it denied?

They claimed since there wasn't evidence of forced entry into the vehicle that it was negligence. So what I learned is next time for insurance purposes I'll knock the damn window out myself.

Side note: I wasn't the only one to get hit during this ring of burglaries. One vehicle had their back windshield removed for entry and then replaced after theft.

Were your doors locked, were your windows up? Someone on here had a claim denied because the truck window was open, while I hate a thief, can't blame the insurance company if the vehicle is left open

To schedule you list every firearm with serial number and value
That is not something I want anyone to know
My homeowners is Safeco and all firearms are insured without listing at no extra cost
I also have NRA endorsed policy that has a premium based on total value but you do not have to list anything under $2,500 in value

Means each gun is listed in the policy separately, and each for a stated amount. Same way you'd have different jewelry items listed. No deductibles and all perils covered.

You could also have multiple items (guns, jewelry, golf clubs) under one policy. Super cheap.
