After the flood, I have just been inundated with fire ant mounds. I've gone old school by dropping half of one mound on another and let them fight it out. I've done boiling water and dish soap. I have kids and dogs, so I try not to go chem war fare, but I've had enough.

I've got an acre of land to cover. What's the best broad solution that will not hurt my dogs or kids?

I have 1-1/2 acre have been using Bifen IT in liquid form. I have a boom sprayer mounted on my lawn mover and spray every 3 months. 3/4 oz per gallon of water. I have been fire ant free for several years now.

Takes care of mosquito and other critters. Avoid spraying on flowering plants because of bees.

Below is what I have. 14-gallon spot sprayer, 1.8 gpm pump with two nozzle 80” swath boom, mounted on the roll over bar of my ZTR lawnmower. You want to spray your entire yard. I buy the Bifen in 3/4 gal containers and use about 1/2 of the container per application. The last time I purchased the 3/4 gal container was about $45.

It is pet friendly after it dries which is about an hour. I wait 3 hours before I let my pets on it.

LINK

In the past I used a john deere 25 gal boom sprayer mounted on a pull behind trailer.

I much prefer what I have now.

To begin I would recommend two applications about 2-3 weeks apart then one application about every 3 months

I tried the talstar granules but with very limited success.

It comes with a wand and hose. There is a Y valve to direct the liquid to the boom sprayer or the wand your choice.

Increase the size of the picture in the link, it shows a wand on top of the tank.

I use the wand to spray my fruit trees etc. but with insecticide made for fruit trees, not the bifen.

On the large mounds I've taken a ~2" diameter PVC pipe and jabbed it deep into the middle of the mound and pulled it out to make a deep cylindrical hole in the mound. Then you pour white gas into the hole so it gets deep into the mound and set it on fire. Flames up like a little volcano and totally eradicates the mound and it lots of fun to boot. It hardens the clay and you can pull out big chunks of their tunnel system which is pretty interesting. Not the most efficient way to take care of a large number of mounds but it's a fun redneck thing to do with a beer on a Friday night and burning those frickers alive is very gratifying.

Bieffrin sprayed through the yard helps keep them at bay after that.

Couple tablespoons of dawn dish soap mixed in a 5 gallon bucket of water will kill a mound of ants Cheap and much less harmful than gasoline

Just pour some gas on them. All of the ants will be dead in 2 seconds. Keep a flame away from the area for 15 minutes and you are good.

I have been doing this for years. Nothing works as fast as gas.

Tal-Star granules, I apply it twice a year and don't have any piles in my yard. One time some red ants made a pile near my fence line. I didn't really feel like taking the spreader out and putting more down so I took a picture of the bag with my phone, walked over to the pile, poked a little hole with a stick to stir them up and showed the ants the pic on my phone....... the next day the ant pile was gone. Thats how good it works.

I took the advice of guys on this board and bought talstar granules from Amazon. I spread them on my lot back in June and I can't find an ant anywhere in my yard. It's by far best product I've ever used for any control.

Well, if they are still alive during the winter, the evening before a "hard" freeze, get a shovel and overturn their mounds. Best method I have ever used. Poison just seemed to spread them out.

We just bought a similar one from Northern Tool. Normally $179 on sale for $119. It is 13 gallons and has both the boom spray and the wand with an 8' hose.
We got it to spray for the sod worms. Works great.

Coach, you don't need a boom sprayer for an acre. Get you a 3 gallon sprayer and mix those Chems up.
