How many of ya'll actually cut through the pelvic bone when you're field dressing (i.e. gutting) a deer?

My buddy does this to get the bladder out, but I usually just work a little on both sides to free it?

Which way do you do it?

I don't field dress. Hang up by the hind legs at the skinning rack and go to work. The rib cage makes a break little basket for all the nasty stuff.

I do. I'll have to split it anyway when I cut and wrap everything.

Yeah I guess I was just mainly talking about field dressing, as in, gutting it in the field, then taking it to another location to be skinned and deboned.

My property is not far from home, so we usually get the guts out there, then take it back to where we can hang it up and finish cleaning it.

In that case no. I just cut from the breastplate to the nut sack and get out all the bad stuff.

Anybody ever done the skin-with-a-rock-or-golf-ball trick? It's a bit weird looking and gross but with all the fricked up shite hunters see, I doubt it's anything new.

So, you just leave the tenderloin in there?

I can't see youtube at work, but I'm assuming that's where you put the ball under the skin, tie on a rope, and pull the skin off with your truck, or winch? If so, that's the only way my daddy ever taught me.

Agreed. If you're still taking whole quarters home in an ice chest, it is time to get with it.

Only two little scent glands to find and cut out, and you're golden.

I don't field gut, ever.

When I'm done skinning and de-boneing, I lay the deer on an ice chest and remove the tenderloin.

make a small cut where the last rib hits the back bone, reach your hand in and start freeing up the tenderloin. Sometimes you will need to work your knife a little but be careful not to bust the gut.

I've done numerous deer this way and I have never lost a tenderloin.

Saves a lot of money and it's not that difficult. Very easy to cut your own roasts however you want too. I usually make roasts out of one hind and make my sausage with the other...

No Sir, with a small sharp knife in one hand and my free hand pushing the stomach lining away from the back bone I get in there and carve them out.

very similar to what I do.

then take the rest of the carcass, guts still intact, and go throw in our deer grave yard.

I've been doing it that way for years. The only thing you lose is the ribs and the tenderloin and it saves so much work.

If I'm not going to be skinning it till later and need it to cool I'll either saw through the pelvic bone or take a heavy blade and cut through it by setting the edge on it then tapping it with a rock or something. If I'm going to be skinning it within a few hours I don't bother. But I always field dress it. Can't see a good enough reason not to.
