Writer Charles Bethea has spent the past few years testing the notion that man was meant to hunt down his prey. Inspired by the best-selling book Born to Run, Fair Chase follows nine distance runners as they attempt to chase down the fastest land animal in North America.

Why chase deer and antelope all over the county on foot? That's what Walker Hounds are for.

My bullets run hell of a lot faster than I do.

Why shoot a buck for horns when a doe is better meat?

I don't doubt it can be done. There is a guy running/hiking the Appalachian Trail right now that is on day 40 and only has 200 miles of the 2180 to go. He is averaging close to 50 miles per day. Not sure how far a deer can run in a day, but I would think they are made for short fast burst rather than long distance. I can see a human closing in eventually.

I don't want to hunt that way though

I've seen guys chase down rabbits in an open field while bush hogging.

But we're talking quite a few young guys who have never gotten any chasing one rabbit.

I can't imagine running a deer to death.

Believe it or not, humans (well, probably not many these days) are the greatest distance runners of any animal on earth.

I have been a distance runner since high school; read excerpts from Born to Run and can see how it might work in open country with the right group of runners/hunters.

Down here in the thick woods, no way you could run down many whitetail.

I'd think it would work the other way around. My wife runs for fun, and she can run me into the damned ground. But in the woods, I can get a rhythm going jumping logs and dodging obstacles and she tires easier.

Figure a woman is basically a two legged whitetail.
