KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — An avalanche swept down a climbing route on Mount Everest early Friday, killing at least 12 Nepalese guides and leaving three missing in the deadliest disaster on the world's highest peak.

The Sherpa guides had gone early in the morning to fix ropes for other climbers when the avalanche hit just them below Camp 2 at about 6:30 a.m., Nepal Tourism Ministry official Krishna Lamsal said from the base camp where he is monitoring rescue efforts.

Sherpas will always get the brunt of it this early. Sad story.

For updates, try LINK although it may be crashed this morning due to traffic. There aren't a lot of good options for mountaineering news other than Alan's site and everestnews.com, so I'm sure they're overloaded.

I'm all for adventure, but I have zero desire to go up there. It's inhospitable. I feel sorry for the sherpas trying to make a living, but, as far as I'm concerned, anybody else that dies up there should have done something a little less risky.

Is there any adventure more dangerous than Everest?

K2 is much more dangerous, as is Annapurna. But only elite climbers attempt those. If you have the money, Everest is doable for the relatively inexperienced.

Fun fact of the day: Most people die coming back down from the summit on Everest.

This is true. The descent is more dangerous than the climb. The climb is usually done in darkness beginning around midnight. This strategy allows climbers to descend in daylight.

I'd do it.

Me and a roommate actually tried to get sponsored to climb it in 2009, but it fell through.
