Ever fly and carry fishing rods?

Flying to Fort Lauderdale, then driving to the Keys.
My friend has been a few times and says that he would absolutely put a few rods in a tube, reels in luggage.
He says that I will absolutely want to fish from various places and that buying a rig there will be expensive.
I plan to do a charter or two, and I know they will provide tackle... but wondering if he's right about wanting to fish from piers, etc.
Any idea? I wonder how much Southwest will charge for an oversize tube.

I flew with 2 tubes on Southwest to Mexico earlier this year. Carry on, no issues.

I'm in the Bahamas right now. I brought my fly rod and a spin cast rig... Both multi piece rigs that fit in a carryon size tube. Reels are in checked bags. Have zero problems. Definitely recommend taking your own.

3' or 4' long, spinning rods were 2 piece break down rods.

Ok.. my rods are 7' and not multi-piece...

You have to drive past a bass pro on your way to the keys. Just stop in an buy a $50 throwaway rod. It kind of depends on which island you are on but for the most part it's just piers and bridges, not much else with the exception on a a hand full of wadeable spots.
Bahia Honda State Park has some walk and wade fishing and so does Geiger beach. If you can scare up a kayak or paddle board it will help.
I forgot to mention to load up whatever reel you want to use and drop it in your carry on. It will save you from having to buy a combo.

I made a rod tube out of thick walled PVC pipe and glued screw on lids to the ends. Made a handle midway with rope. Works fine.

I like that idea, Barf.
Good thought on the pvc too.
