Brothers, I just bought a little Boston whaler 17 foot Mantauk to play around with and for my kids to learn about boating and fishing on. It came with a 70 Evinrude Johnson Seahorse that has sat for several years. Surprisingly it cranked and ran ok and was able to take it out on a water test but it had no top end and began gurgling which I took it to be to be fuel problems. So replaced the plugs filter fuel lines and tank and cleaned the carbs etc and worked in it for half a day. Replace the tank and the lines because the fuel pressure was was not sufficient to fill the fuel filter more than halfway which we thought maybe a bulb tank issue as they were very old and now it won't crank at all. Lol. I can crank it with starter fluid but it will not run long. i suspect it is either the carburetors need to be rebuilt, power-pack is bad, or the Most likely i suspect the fuel pump may just be going out and too weak to keep the engine running properly. Any thoughts from the ob? Am I missing anything ?

"frog hair" the jets, then come back and tell us about cleaning the carbs.

Not the fuel pump for sure. When a fuel pump goes out, it will still pump, but you will see gas in the exhaust/water. If it is firing off on starter fluid, not a power pack. Leaves it to be the carb.

Note! You should not be using anything like starter fluid in that motor. That can burn a piston or bearing very quick. Use some of the gas that is mixed with oil. Put it in a oil pump can. Harbor freight has them for under $5.

Define "cleaning the carbs". Did you take the carb completely apart, cleaning the jets and every little tube and passageway in it?

Also check the fuel lines and make sure they are fastened tight.

Check the container of the fuel filter and make sure it is airtight. Might need to put some teflon tape on the threads to seal it. Getting air in the fuel can cause this problem, as can the Carb being clogged.

Thanks guys looks like the universal opinion of the ob is that it is the carb. We just sprayed them out, etc we didnt take them apart etc. there was a lot of junk in
them . Hell I hope you guys are right. Brought it to the dealership as he promised me he could have it back to me this weekend if nothin major. So i should have it back around July 4th. (Lol) thanks again for the good advice. My daughter already caught a nice 18 inch trout first cast on it durin the water test and really likes it so hoping nothing major. The motor sounds strong when idling on for the whole five minutes it ran great on he water and I have had a few seahorses and they were all like a zombie as you could kill them if you tried.
