Duck call advice
Posted by PurpleHaze583 on 8/3/16 at 8:56 pm00
I've been duck hunting for years and have historically depended on the other hunters to use the duck call in the blind. I want to get into calling and wanted to get advice on a good duck call for beginners and a good instructional resource. Any advice?

RNT has a CD set that I think is really good.
How much do you want to spend on a call? I love single reed

Try to sound like ducks....not other callers. Get a double reed and go out to a pond/lake where there are ducks. Listen to them and try to imitate their sounds. Do that, and you'll be better than 90% of the dudes blowing machine gun sounds through $150 calls.
Haydels DR85 is a great call to start with.

Flexible on the budget but was thinking under $50.

Follow this mans advice^. Those high dollar calls are nice and fun to play with, but not necessary to kill ducks.

Not trying to sound like the new age duck commander crowd, but give their calls a shot. I've been blowing the same one for 20 years. They are easy to blow and sound very raspy like a real mallard.

Buck Gardner makes some nice calls on the cheap. Some include a CD or DVD. Double reeds are easier to blow, but single reeds will give you more versatility. You tube has tons of videos that will help you also. Good luck

Dr85 is the best bang for your buck
RNT Daisy cutter is such a good raspy call for finishing birds.
The BEST Call tofinish shy ducks is a whistle.
Be cognizant of the ducks you're calling to greys will come to mallard calls but prefer "grunty" quacks.
Sometimes, the best call is no call.

For about 25 bones you can get the DR-85 along with instructional CD. Good kit.

I learned to call by practicing in the truck when I was driving. No one else could hear and be annoyed and I never had to remind myself to practice. Just picked them up every time I got in the truck. I listened to a lot of videos on YouTube and learned some from that. It takes time and practice. I'm no where near the best caller and I still practice a good bit before the season. I always let the older hunters call if I'm hunting with someone and I pick up what they're doing because they're usually better.

There are guys named Willie and Si who can help you. They are likely in your neighborhood.
