Anyone here ever hunted with one? I personally want to get a Heym .500 Nitro Express. Big, hard hitting round, and expensive to shoot, but it is ballistically great for big game

And so is the mighty 416 Rigby

My dad has a Westley Richards 450/400. It's a beautiful rifle but it has no practical purpose in North America.

Definitely. That is the big draw back of these rifles. I've seen a Holland & Holland royal double rifle fetch $450,000

They truly are beautiful rifles and a work of craftsmanship. A lot of these rifles you can get the engraving with either French or English walnut stocks. Some of them I wouldn't even take out of the case

But that's true, these rifles are not practical on North America. Best off using it on fairly close range game in Africa

I think you can get one in a CZ550 Safari magnum rifle, will run $2000-$3000

And yes that round is a beast

You can get a field grade CZ for 1000 if you look. Cabelas in Gonzales has some big bores every so often.

i used to deer hunt with a guy that was a former sniper/instructor in the Thailand Marine Corps. he was telling me that the .416 is a round capable of a whole lot more than what is currently offered, it just hasn't been developed and is somewhat over looked by the industry.
he/they primarily used it to take out rogue elephants that sometime occurred in Thailand.

Saw a used one in the gun room yesterday, didn't notice the caliber or maker but the price take was ~$15k

One of my dad's best friends hunts in Africa every 2 years. He has a Heym in .500 nitro. Killed 2 elephants and a buffalo with it.

I wish there were some more affordable double rifles available in something like .45-70. That would be cool as hell to deer hunt with.

The expensive ones are absolutely beautiful pieces of hardware. It would be cool to have one in .375 h&h since you could at least use it for grizzly bears or and moose and cattle.

Aren't there a few big bores that are not horribly expensive to shoot like .470NE? I held a kreighoff big 5 in .470 once

The ammo really isn't all that bad. The 450/400 in about $120 for 20. $6 a shot isn't terrible.

Here's some for $5 per pull

That's no worse than some of the weatherby mags.

Aren't some of the new ruger mags pretty affordable as far as big bore rifles go?

CZ, Sako, and Winchester make very affordable big bores. Sub $2k.

I shot a Cape Buffalo with a Merkel 470 Nitro.

It was the second shot I ever took with the gun. At 30 yards it was a piece of cake.

We shot a .470NE at a place in TN that used to sell safari gear. I shot it enough that it got me flinching for a bit when I went back top my deer rifle. Had to work that out for a bit. Recoil was "enthusiastic" It did turn the top of a 6x6 fence post into a "Bloomin' Onion" though.

After shooting 3" mag light field slugs out of a 5 pound single shot 12ga, I would really like to see how one of those rifles compares.

It can't be THAT much worse. That 12ga is by a very large margin the worst recoiling gun I've ever shot.
