Dogs fighting with raccoons - risk to dog?

I've got a big raccoon coming up to the house at night. Aussie Shepherd has been in four fights with the raccoon and has only sustained one small wound. The coon goes under a car nearby that the dog cannot get under and then goes up an oak tree to escape.

Last fight, my 10 year old border collie joined in (surprising, since she's a sweet dog who is used to get kids who have been hurt by dogs acclimated back to dogs). She has dull teeth from catching frisbees all her life.

Do I need to be worried that the coon is going to disembowel the dogs (as I've read)? My Aussie is very quick (has killed dozens of copperheads) so I have assumed she can handle it.

I live in town so I can't shoot it.

Not sure how rabies works- I'm sure your dog is vaccinated but idk if that protects from a bite or scratch that breaks the skin or not.

I wouldn't worry about the Aussie or the border collie being disemboweled. They have superior size, strength, and quickness on the coon

I can't remember the name... but we get some stuff that looks like (and I think we called it) kitty litter from tractor supply that we would put in a bowl and mix with 7up or sprite. When the raccoons would drink/eat it, they would walk a few feet then shite themselves and throw up and then die. It was some good stuff.

My border collie is 10 and I was stunned at how ferocious she was with the coon. I've never seen her in the fight mode before. She's fantastic with kids who have been bitten by other dogs.

ETA: The bow suggestion was a good idea.

I've seen some dogs frick up a coon. I don't think most dogs would be able to though. I let my dog go after anything in the yard. He's got a possum and now a rooster. Rabies shots should keep them safe

From my experience, a large to medium sized dog is more than a match for most racoons(average to big, some of the really big ones I've seen may give a medium dog more trouble) on dry land, particularly the herding type dogs.

From what I've been told, the real potential for trouble is in the water. Raccoons are excellent swimmers and have been know to drown a larger dog that pursues them into the water.

ETA rabies/disease is the only thing I'd worry about.

You're going to be sorry if a racoon gives your dog a nasty disease or parasite. Chase the racoon off yourself or get a live catch trap and get animal control to move it away. Common sense, use it.

I've seen a coon double back and drown a blue tick before. Those motherfrickers will fight their arse off. I have a 107lb lab that has gotten tied up with 4 and he's usually cut up pretty damn good after he kills them. I had a beagle that a coon killed when I was 12 though.

just buy a suppressor. An excuse to give the misses because you don't want the neighbors to call the cops and you get a bad arse toy

I really feel sorry for everyone with dogs that can't handle a coon. I have never seen a dog of ours struggle with a coon or nutria. Usually really quick deaths.

My old blue tick killed every coon he fought. He would chomp on their heads till it felt like a bean bag. None of those coons were huge. I've also seen a coon under my bird feeder attack and kill a squirrel. They're vicious little bastards.

If you live in the city, just man up. Go grab that critter by the tail then choke it to death. I'll video it for you tube if you like.

Depends on the coon and the dog. To answer your question, yes it is absolutely a risk to the dog.

The dog may win the fight but will more than likely still get hurt. If it is a big raccoon watch out.

Highly aggressive and generally pretty nasty.

I'd go another route.
