Dog food?

Just brought home a little black lab and now after reading reviews online I'm second guessing my food choice. I bought Hill's Science puppy food off of my vet's recommendation. After looking at reviews it seems Hill's offers vets that are in school scholarships and other what nots to get their support... Probably not that big of a deal, but I figured I'd come hit up the OB to see what you guys are feeding your dogs.
I don't need the cheapest or the highest quality dog food.. Something in the middle seems like a reasonable goal.

I find it overpriced, but your dog will be fine.

It's called supporting the industry you make your living from. Do you have a problem with that? Kind of like a boat builder or gun manufacturer sponsoring a tournament.
Hills doesn't do anything out of the ordinary.
To your question, there are several other options- high end to low end to pick from. Just go get Purina Puppy Chow. Unless you think the site tours they offer distributors is an unethical effort to attract support

Fromm is a decently priced high quality food. You can go grain free if you want the better version of it, but the standard version isn't too bad either.
Hill's isn't very good, but they price it like it is...

Not true. How can a DVM be in school? They wouldn't be a DVM if they were in school in the first place.
For a young pup, no need to buy high dollar food. I have an old lab that is now 11 years old. Lots of health problems. She gets Science diet for old dogs. If I take her off of it for a few days, she can barely get up and walk. So yes, that crap works for her. And yes, I get that food for free from my daughter who is a DVM.

You don't have to go buy the most expensive dog food. But, in my opinion, it's best to feed them something that has some sort of meat as the number one ingredient and isn't made up of mostly grains. Especially for a growing puppy.
I've been feeding taste of the wild for years, but I've been thinking about switching. The price seems to go up a dollar every year.

From what I've read, Science Diet is overpriced and while not Old Roy, still has lots of cheap fillers. My dogs are on Blue Buffalo, though recent reports have come out saying that's not all it's cracked up to be either; but they eat it and do well on it.
Also check Tractor Supply, they have good quality foods (Diamond Naturals and Taste of the Wild) for good prices. My dogs wouldn't eat the Diamond Naturals unfortunately but it's supposed to be good quality.

We use Fromm's Large Breed for our GSDs. Nice trick I learned on judging dog foods is to look at the first three ingredients. Those three are usually the largest components of the food and can be an indicator of the quality of the food/protein.
Fromm's LB - Duck, Chicken Meal, Chicken
Hill's Science Puppy - Chicken Meal, Cracked Pearled Barley, Pork Meal
Both contain protein, but I would consider the proteins in the Fromm's to be much higher quality. Main thing with a puppy is to feed well, but not so much that they gain weight faster than their frame can handle. The amount I feed my dogs changes based on age and activity levels. I measure out their meals individually every day, but I'm OCD.

Victor.
The higher ends, Canidae, AvoDerm, Merrick, Scans, Blue Buffalo, etc. are just about one in the same.

Every recommendation here, including the one from your vet, is just fine.
Make sure to get heartworm prevention for your pup

Yes! That's the one I was trying to think of earlier. My pups loved this one. It gets good ratings on Dog Food Advisor too.

I feed my now 1 year old lab Purina Pro Plan Puppy. Am getting a new lab pup in 4 weeks and he will go on the same food. My 1 year old is 60 pounds now and in great health.
