SHTF is not an excuse for complete lack of morals and decency
Posted on 2/16/13 at 7:27 pm to RATeamWannabe
If it really hits the fan and starts flinging on the walls, morals and decency go out the door. I have been through something pretty close, and people honestly just start walking around like zombies with no idea what to do or where to go. Then, they start stealing, scavenging, and pulling B&Es. Just know that it can and will definitely happen within 3 days

I do not consider myself a prepper in that I consider preppers to be those idiots on tv who can think of nothing else...
I do however, have a closet where I keep all of my hunting and fishing shite where there is also bug out bag and 4-5 days worth of food and water...
I honestly consider it just good planning in case of a tornado, ice storm, etc. that would quickly clear the store shelves...
I consider being prepared just thinking about how you would do things in a pinch and not really spending your life savings installing a bunker and buying years worth of food...

Knowledge is the most valuable "prep"
Posted on 2/16/13 at 11:30 pm to hashbrowns
I'm just gonna roll to our ranch in South Texas. Plenty of animals to eat and plenty of water with the well. I don't see us running out of hogs and deer to eat any time soon.

I am an anti prepper. I have an arsenal and a ton of ammo. I plan on killing and robbing real preppers. Call Me lazy.

I keep enough in the house to survive a couple weeks. But nothing special.

Probably be calling you dead pretty quick.
I'm no "prepper" but I have enough food and water for my family of 4 for a week and plenty of ammo to provide for them after that.
But if you think you are gonna be able to go all Jessie James and just roll up into people's houses with your gun and take whatever you want.....I'm afraid that the times and situation of SHTF would make that very difficult. People that took the time to prep with supplies probably took the time to prep with defense. They will be on defense and will not hesitate to shoot someone that steps the 1st foot on their property.

Of course our government will never collapse and the currency will never go to zero. It's never happened in any other country and it can not ever happen here.
only a fool would think that such unprecedented events could happen here.

THIS^^^ This thread shows that many people believe a rifle and some ammo is all the prep they're gonna need -- they'll just take what they want. That's interesting. Good to know.
The key with being prepared isn't a bunker or mounds of freeze dried food. It is old ways skills. Can you find water, can you grow food, raise livestock successfully, cooperate with your neighbors, fix things, build useful things? Those kinds of skills are more important than stuff.
Whoever said knowledge is the best prep was right on the money IMO.
The ignorance of history displayed in this thread is surprising... or maybe it's just over confidence in our current system. Most of us would not even be here if our ancestors 4 generations ago didn't have enough sense to prepare for a failed harvest, flood, or some other calamity that would have eliminated food supply in a given year. Anybody here ever heard of Just-in-time delivery? And most of you live in hurricane country. Wow.
What was common sense for most of America's history is now considered insane?
Hmm. To me that belief in chimeras, in governments that don't go totalitarian, currencies that don't collapse, military that never get defeated, and borders that never get violated by hostile forces is crazy. Believing that is like driving forward by looking in your review mirror.
Failure to plan is planning to fail.

i got a book - When all Hell Breaks Loose by Cody Lunding - that's really informative on simple things such as preparation of potable water using xx amounts of bleach. water is your most critical
need for sure.
the guy is a little squirrely, but he did his homework. a book like that is priceless when you really need it. and for the price.....

I agree with your timetable. People get very ugly, very quickly.
That said, most of them lack the testicles to face down a weapon and will quickly back off and move on to the next, weaker target.
In a TEOTWAWKI scenario there is still no excuse for not acting in a moral and sane manner. You will have to be prepared to take care of your family by whatever means necessary, though.

Look around your neighborhood. I know in mine I could knock off about fifty houses that are more than likely unarmed and not ready.
On a serious note. I have disussed with my son (the SEAL) about going to the Stennis Ctr if it ever happened and jumping on one of the SWCC boats with his crew. We would go down the river into the gulf and hijack a cruise ship. We would have food, water, dancefloor, theater, etc...

Gas lines as long as BR traffic, shootouts for gas, ramming other carsfor gas, fights to get water that the government hands out, and asking what supplies other people have.
Not having electricity, water, food, and sewer turns good people bad after a couple of days. If you think it won't and want to be moral, well, haha. I am just gonna laugh at you.
shite gets real quicker than you think. Only reason to talk to other people is bargaining and for information. If you are smart enough, you can get whatever you need from bargaining/trading. Hell, I got us free fuel/beer/snacks by just letting a gas station use an extra generator that we had sitting around. Free fuel for a week was priceless IMO.
All of this mainly applies to being in the city. Being in the woods, you can just hang out by yourself and do what you want.
Eta: I can get your stuff if I want it. No way would I come in guns blazing like a SWAT team, but I would eventually get it. You could have 800 guns and 90,000 rds of ammo. I can get it with one rifle and a 5rd magazine
Your neighbors would let me do that as long as I shared the booty and benefitted them more than you did(knowledge or resources). Just knowing someone and having an agreement with them does nothing for you

Did this as much for the privacy and scenery by building my retirement home on a hill top with wooded acres. I'm surrounded by cattle acreage around me. Deer, turkey, rabbit, and squirrels all around. I grow a garden and can, whatever I don't give away. I have planted 20 fruit trees, including two figs that I didn't know would grow here. My dog's run is 10' x 200' that parallels the fruit trees, to deter the deer. I have an old stone lined well on my flat acres, that was recently re-dug. I also have a creek below my hill. I have stocked some canned food and pasta. For use and trade, I have lots of Clorox and salt. My wife is an RN and has put together some supplies. I have multiple weapons, but would like more ammo. I plan to get back into chickens real soon, cuz I love eggs. Hope no events cause a crisis, but I feel that my situation is better than most.
