Or do you have a cheaper set up?

Making my maiden voyage next weekend. Think I'll with my older Garcias amd a Zebco. Think I'll leave the Shimanos at home.

One option. Ugly as hell, but quite useful.

Bring the good stuff. What are you worried about? In almost 10 years of kayak fishing I've lost two rods - one when I flipped after misreading a 3' fall/rapids and the other when I went underneath a willow tree and I was using a flush mount rod holder. The rod got caught in the tree and apparently pulled right out. I wouldn't be too concerned. And if you fish with your old backup gear you'll just be pissed because it won't work as well as the newer good stuff.

I put rod floats on all my rods in the event I flip or drop one, it was a concern of mine at first too but it has never been an issue.

Of course i do. I've never lost one in 5 years of kayak fishing and it's the only kind of fishing I do anyway.

I do. I have three rod floats that I use when I go into the gulf (only time I've ever flipped in 10 years of yak fishing was in the breakers). $10 for three is good insurance anyway. I'd cry like a baby if my Stella/St. Croix combo ended up at the bottom of the gulf

These have a slim profile and will float heavy gear.

I use the rod floats like the ones in the above post. Bass pro sells them in a three pack for ten dollars.

I started using the floats when kayak fishing, but I also have the floats on the rods my kids use in the big boat.

I take my Dobyn's/Lews combos in my kayak but I'm very careful with them. I cut a pool noodle down to the approximate length from the reel to the first guide. Then, I slit the noodle down one side so I can slip the rod in. When I use a rod, I pull off the noodle and put it back on when I change rods.

I have known friends to "save" their good fishing tackle and use the old stuff for SW fishing, yaking, camping, etc. I always get a chuckle out of them with the old Zebcos. You bought the nice stuff to use it, don't save it. You could lose or break a rig at any time.

Above pic is from the link, and your only comment is "ugly as hell"?

I bring my good stuff, but my best isn't that good. I don't know if I could bring a $1k+ rig out there.

If I'm fishing, I'm bringing the heat, period.
