Check engine light came on. Took it to my mechanic and he said my #8 glow plug was bad. Made plans to drop it off next week to get fixed. The today picking up my son from school and I start my truck up and it dies and will not restart. Its an 08 alittle over 100k miles. Check the fuel filter and it was full. Saw something about a cam shaft sensor and a few other things. Anyone have this issue and any ideas of what it could be. Its a GMC.

What brand truck. Each has their quirks.

try pumping the primer on the factory fuel filter head ...if it starts after that, it is your fuel filter...
also at one time there was a bad batch of fuel filters that allowed air in the system...this will also be evident if it starts after pumping the primer...
I assume when you say won't start, that it turns over but just does not start...
let me know and we'll go from there...
also: when replacing glow plugs, it's best to change that whole side(4)...use genuine GM-AC Delco which will look like this
Amazon has the best prices on these.

A easy few things to check on.
Are the batteries fully charged? Is the alternator fully operational? A weak battery or bad alternator could be a potential problem from not sending enough voltage to all the engine electronics.
Oil level. Is there the full amount in the crank case? The HPOP is actuated by engine oil.
Your IPR valve could be stopped up or bad. I think on GMs Duramax, you need at least 500 psi on the oil to crank the engine.
There are lots of Duramax message boards out there. They are very informative.

Duramax injectors are not oil operated
they don't have an IPR either
Lets start with the basics first...we need to know if it turns over normally with a no start condition...
I know...I'm an Admin on one...
on edit: Sorry, but I have to wake up @ 0200 so I will be out of pocket for next 5 hours...

Easiest thing to do is pump the primer. If it starts and dies, change the fuel filter.

I had a 08 chevy 2500 diesel and i changed 5 out of 8 glow plugs in the first 60k miles. Ended up trading the truck in. For some reason those year models must have had a bad batch.

06 Duramax owner here. I've got one glow plug out but no issues starting the truck. However, the fuel filter housing did have to be replaced on my truck. If its cranking and won't start, i'd definitely look at that along with the other usual suspects.

yeah my water in fuel sensor developed a leak and was causing starting issues. I replaced it with an aluminum one and that solved that issue.

I pumped the primer bulb right away figuring that was it but it was a no go. It turns over fine. Just won't start. I did change my oil a couple weeks ago so it is full. I have it at a garage right now waiting to see what they say.

Mine did the same thing- would turn over but not start. Fuel filter housing had a leak. you could pump the primer bulb till your arm fell off and it did no good. the housing screws on so you might be able to fix it yourself.

It was the fuel filter housing. Thanks everyone for the help.

Thanks for reporting back...nothing chaps me more than when you try to help someone and they never come back to let you know of the outcome..

Yeah. 2003 Duramax here. Did the unthinkable...running on my aux tank (no float/sending unit)..and ran it dry. Swapped back to the main but not before she died.
Hit the primer a number of times to get it back primed..but forgot to crack the bleeder screw. Actually blew out the WIF sensor from the bottom...
Also learned about the small schrader valve on the front...bled the air from there as well and got a stream of diesel over the shoulder before she'd crank.
Never again...I learned my lesson quickly. I love that ole man's truck. Next one I'm gonna pay for I know...but I don't think I can ever go back to a gasoline truck.
Been a Ford driver all my life...driving that Chevrolet Diesel may have converted me...but it's a diesel...not a Chevy gas. And I haven't heard a whole lot bad about them...but a lot bad about the Fords.

One glow plug won't keep that truck from starting. The old 6.5's would start on half their glow plugs this time of year. How long did it run before quitting? Unusual amount of smoke from the exhaust while it ran? Do you have access to a code scanner to see if any pending codes are hanging?
