Destin Charter Boats

Been a few years since I've been fishing out of Destin. The last time was on a boat called the Backdown II and we did ok but caught too many Mackerel for my liking. Anybody have a rec on a good charter boat out of Destin? We're going end of May. Looking for. 6-8 person 8hr Charter, off shore, for general bottom fishing not so much trolling. Tia

My family has used BackLash before and it was very good, but Capt Jason Mikel is no longer the captain. He has moved to Finest Kind, and I have not been on that boat. Also I would consider what will be available to catch, no AJ or triggerfish, red snapper will probably not open until June first, some of the groupers (gag) may not open until June first

There are a limited amount of boats that can catch snapper year round. Also snapper will likely be open during the weekends in May, possibly Friday's too. Normally I'd not recommmend going during the weekend but that would be a good time of year to do so.
Mackerel is generally caught as a time killer. Fun and easy to catch, cheap to troll for close inshore. The names above are good ones.

Thanks. Good point on what seasons will be open. I didn't know even think about that. I guess end of May it will be trolling for greasy arse Mackerel or nothing. Is there even anything you can bottom fish for and keep in May? Maybe Vermilion snapper or something like that?

Grouper will be in, most likely red snapper will be in during the weekends. Like jack wagons they always announce it late like mid to late April for the extended season. Mingo snapper will be in.
Honestly, I'd call around until you find someone that will take you mingo snapper fishing. You should be able to slay them. There's a chance you will need a 10 hour trip for that, but 8 hours should be fine.

You could try and find someone to do mangrove snapper, they just call them black snapper. Any snapper besides red.

Yeah I just looked. They have an April commission meeting when they will announce dates officially. Most likely red snapper will be open on the weekends at least, I can't remember but state waters season hasn't been announced either it usually opens the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. But the last few years red snapper have been open in state waters a couple weekends before that additionally.

Fish with Jason a bunch. This. Nicer boat than the Backlash. He is one heck of a guide and has some kick arse AJ spots.

Booked with Jason. We're pretty much shite out of luck on keeping anything other than vermillion snapper during the time frame were going. Oh well, I would still rather that than trolling for mackerel..

if thats all thats available you can catch a lot in a short time, you could probably do a 5-6 hr trip, otherwise they will waste your time trolling mackerel. Destin fishing kind of sucks

It kinda does if you can't catch the elusive Red Snapper and AJ's are closed.

Which sucks because releasing them attracts Flippers and then you will have those frickers eating all of the throwbacks as the poor Snappers get their wits about them after getting pulled up from 200' and then getting their air bladder popped.

Mr. Balls, if the Cobia migration is on, troll for them. Fine eating and plenty of fun.

Definitely. I went out on Finest Kind probably a couple of dozen times. Always a good trip.
