Looking for advice:

I have a 21' aluminum hull. Looking to put a decent Depth Finder / GPS map. I basically want a decent GPS mapping system that also shows depth. I'm leaning toward the Humminbird Helix 7 sonar gps. I'd like to spend $500 max.

What's the difference between down imaging and side imaging.

I have been pleased with my Humminbirds. But the Lowrances will allow you to use Standard mapping satellite imagery SD cards as well as the Navionics Where as Navionics is all I've been able to find for mapping on my Humminbird units.

Standard map E cards

interested to hear if anyone has other mapping options for Humminbird

Lowrance elite 5 or 7, with custom aerial maps or a map card. Humminbird unit you mentioned doesn't take imagery cards. Also down imaging is straight down where sidescan looks down and to the left and right of boat. I have it and don't use it. I mainly need a gps and depth.

New Garmin EchoMap series can use a statewide ($99) satelitte overlay. I have a new 7-in GPS unit but haven't installed yet.

I have the helix 5 and really like it. I white perch fish a lot and the side imaging comes in handy.
