Hey guys, I'm trying to get a point in the right direction here if anyone cares to chime in. I haven't hunted in about 15 years because we sold some family property. I now have young boys (9 and 6), so we are about to add hunting in with our fishing. I've never joined a deer lease, but I have a couple of options north of Mandeville. What are some things to look for as well as some fair prices for the area? Thanks

Where north of mandeville? I have two friends that hunt right there off hwy 36. Mossy oak hunting club I think it's called.

Whichever option you choose, let me know of the others you did not choose. I'm looking to get into one on that side.

I'd like to stay within an hour of Mandeville just because I think we'd use it more if it's closer. The main lease I'm looking at is about 10 minutes from my house. I think it has about 10-15 members and about 1100 acres.

Get someone to fully explain the rules to you. Need to know if there are club stands , or only personal stands, and which ones you can hunt. Campground info, spot for a trailer?, alcohol policy?, run dogs?, # of deer/antler restrictions, guest policy, children policy (do they count as a guest/count against your kill #s), management program, etc.

I know of one on Lacombe, one in Bedico and one up 40 however the one you are describing I am not familiar with. I am interested though, they have any more room?

Thanks, Slick. I didn't think about a couple of those questions. I know there are no personal stands and there is a campsite that needs to be cleaned up, but I will find out about the other issues. Does $1000 sound about right for a lease in this area? Greenhead, I will check.

$1000 sounds SKY high for this area. Should be able to find a good lease for .50/acre roughly. Most in the St. Tammany/Washington parish area are about $5-600/year. With the exception of Money Hill since it was re-organized it is high dollar.

Ed Core no longer is in charge of it. New guys have it good fellas but they have turned it into a trophy club, major antler restrictions and I believe about $2500/year. However they have begun to kill some nice deer on it.

Hammer, I am looking at another, larger lease for around $750. I just have to be sure they have a spot available. I haven't found one for less than that yet.

I didn't realize leases were that cheap in that area. You think more people around here would go that route as opposed to the $2k leases in South MS, plus $500 licenses.

You make it sound like its a bad thing. I have no experience with leases, but I think everyone would benefit if more places did this.

When I was there, IIRC, it was 4pts or better, no spread stipulation. Basically people would come blast everything opening weekend, the doe days, and closing weekend. There were 5x as many killed on those few days than the whole rest of the season.

When I was younger and a guest, people would show up at 8am and come kick me out of the stand they wanted to hunt and leave at 9. I don't mind one or two guys running by that late, but to kick me out and then have other people bitch because I was running to another stand at that time is ridiculous.

They also started sub-leasing out sections of the property even though the dues stayed the same. We left a year after they did that.

Antler restrictions are a good idea for the place, but $2500/yr for the property I used to hunt is outrageous. I guess if they can get that, then go for it. You aren't gonna get a different quality of hunters though, just more money.
