Never.

Only time I'll "call" a deer is when I see a buck on the move that doesn't look like he is stopping. I'll whistle at him to get him to stop

During pre-rut I will grunt every 10-15 mins or so if not seeing anything or if a buck is passing by and not looking like he will be in bow range.

Just because they don't respond immediately doesn't mean they didn't hear it.
Twice I have had a buck go by without any inclination that he heard the grunting before swinging back by 10 minutes later heading straight to me.
Killed a 130 couple years ago that I pulled away from a hot doe with a grunt.
Front coming in and wind picking up. Grunted during the calm between gusts of wind and they must have been within earshot, because he came within 15 yards of my tree looking for the "intruder".
Granted he was a 5 1/2 yr old buck so maybe his testosterone got the best of him because he passed by me before I could get a shot, walked about 45 yds away with no shot, and then proceeded to turn and come back towards me still looking for the "other buck". Laced him at 12 yds.He piled up about 50 yds away and tt
he hot doe with him trotted over to see what all the commotion was about. She stood over him for a minute or two and finally realized his breeding days were over and hot-footed it out of there.

The best responses to a grunt I have had were both when the bucks were in the process of making a rub, since they were obviously getting jacked-up for the rut. Both immediately stopped and came on a dead walk straight to the tree I had my climber in, one from about 60 yds and the other from @ 80 yds. Killed both with spine shots within 5 yds of the bottom of my tree. These were a week apart, one in Sc and the other in Ga.

As for bleats (the can) the only thing I ever called in were two yotes last year that came running from over 100 yds away before I could even get the can in my pocket and to full draw. No shot on either at 25 yds because of brush but I was shocked at how fast they responded to the first bleat on the can.

About 8-10 grunts every 15-20 min

Had a mature buck run up on me from behind before I could get ready to shoot

In Kansas, had a buck hanging with/trailing a doe, and he snort wheezed at me. Was cool as hell

Had several young bucks change direction to come check out the grunts.

Last week a young 8pt did a semi-circle around me walking in and out of woods while looking my direction the while time. Once he realized he couldn't find anything, he turned to follow 3 does he saw that walked off into the woods

All depends on where I am hunting. Heavy pressure area I rarely call unless I have eyes on a deer and wind is blowing the right way. Spots without a lot of hunters I call every 30-45.

I've had an 8pt come in running 4 different times on a morning hunt every time I grunted. I've also had young bucks and does in a plot and grunted and they never paid attention. I'll do this maybe every 30 min or so. Do maybe a roar and some tending type grunts.

So as far as grunting I don't think it can hurt with the exception of a deer pinpointing your location in a tree.

This is the first year I've really rattled on a reg basis. I do it about once an hour if it's slow and several times this year I've got responses (young bucks and does)

I think that damn bleat can is useless and figuring out the vocals of a deer is tough. I've seen bucks chase does and instead of grunting they were blowing. Saw a doe just walking and bleating but sounded more like a cat meowing real load. Watch a spike once that sounded more like a calf in distress than what you would think a deer would.
