Working on a project and looking for a list/database of Agricultural Landowners in the state. Tried both the local USDA office and local assessors office and was greeted by the proverbial Dear-In-Headlights. Any recommendations of where to find that info? T.I.A.

What kind of information do you need from the producers?

ETA:
Like Cowboy says below, there is a database and every parish has a producer list. Without knowing specifically what you want, you're not got to get access to the databases.

There is a such thing, but it is pretty much only available to USDA employees. Probably why you got that look. They were playing dumb.

Even so, that database only includes owners, operators, and other tenants when the land has had farm records established on it. I know for a fact that every agricultural landowner is not on those lists, simply for the fact that all have not eatablished records with the USDA.

I'm looking for a list of landowners (or tenants) that includes name & mailing address of each landowner, as well as number of acres under cultivation (most recent). Production classifications would also be useful.

There's ag summary put out annually that will tell you the number of producers, what they're producing and acreage, and value. I can get you one of those if that'll cover what you are looking for.

If you want contact information you'll need to explain exactly why you need it.

Maybe your first project should be to compile a list/database of ag landowners in the state.

I think even if FSA/USDA would give you a list it would be by parish and you'd have to visit every parish service center, but I doubt you'll get a list from them.

An alternative might be the EWG website that show's the recipients of the gov cheese, but this includes production payments and crp/wrp type payments but the site might have a filter??????????

This was my very first thought and why I took a stab at the USDA in DC - using a top-down method. I have an email into my local Farm Service office. Waiting...

I'll try EWG. Thanks for the tip.

The list of producers is private.

But the list of Ag subsidies is public. That will lead you to the producers. Based on their volume of base acre payments over the years. Thats easy to find.

This is interesting. No contact info, but it's a great start. Google is my friend....

They won't give you contact information of their database so you can solicit.

If you really are selling a service call the local LSU AgCenter Extension office and see if there are any field days coming up where you can set up a booth. Other than that, go to the co-ops and see who's around.

Yep. Found that out pretty quick.

Excellent idea - if priced right. Are they free?

I can't remember exact pricing, but I want to say $50-100 to set up a booth.

Relatively speaking, that's almost free. Do you recall if these are well attended? Head count?

Probably 150-200 people, but that was for a tri-parish meeting. It'll change depending on the area

May I ask what you do, obviously sells in AG of some sort. Any more detail? Have always been interested in AG and may have be looking for another industry soon.

If you hit something like the Rice Field Day in Crowley, there will be a couple hundred people there, but not all are farmers. NRCS employees attend as well. Most will be farmers, but there will be agency and extension personnel as well.

Now, on the other hand, I've been to a few field days where there were 30 or 40 people.

The Rice Field Day probably draws the biggest crowd in South Louisiana. They have one in North Louisiana as well, so if your hope is to get in front of as many farmers in the state as possible, you would probably do best going to those. You will see most of the same faces at the other field days since they typically present the same thing in a given region of the state. There were several small field days across South Louisiana before the Rice Field Day in Crowley, so the attendees were typically just those in that Parish.
