Went to buy the Smith&Wes MP15 for $589 at cabelas. They were sold out, are there any other ARs in that price range to check out?

Call your local LGS or call Academy.

And make sure you say AR556 - not SR556, because you will get sticker shock (SR556 is a piston gun an quite a bit more expensive).

ETA: Academy may have the M&P 15 Sport as well.

I don't know what your dad is like but I bought my dad a kit a few years ago. He is a tinkerer not really a shooter, so we had a good time building it. Just a standard A2 replica is what he wanted. I think we've shot it once, but he had a good time building it.

The new Mod 2 or gen 2 whatever they are calling it should be available at some dealers. I had a couple distributors call the past couple days offering them.

Palmetto State Armory should have a complete AR in that price range online.

Anyone have any reviews for a DPMS? Cabelas also had this gun for sale, i have never heard of them. The pops doesn't really want to spend over $600. (Tight wad huh?)

Carson, does Bowies have anything in the sub $600 range?

I've never had a DPMS but their reputation is fairly solid. Wal-Mart used to carry them (not dispostive, of course, but they don't, generally, carry unreputable brands of firearm).

$600 is about right - for a basic, no frills carbine. The M&P Sport and Ruger AR556 are, generally, consensus picks on here for value and they are right at that price point. The DPMS may be as well.

Yeah, if Carson doesn't know on this, no one does - at least for BR and the surrounding area.

Buddy bought one the night of the San Bernardino shooting for $599 shipped. Now they are out of stock virtually everywhere online or the price has jumped. You may have luck finding one at your LGS.

Kentucky Gun Co has the S&W Sport II in stock for $629.99 (cash discount price).

The Sport II has a forward assist, dust cover, Magpul BUS, and one 30rd PMAG. Id jump on this if I were you.

GrabaGun has the DPMS Oracle for $499. It's a decent little plinker ar LINK

They also have DelTon Sport for $519. I have this gun and the only thing I don't like about it is the pencil barrel, but that's not a real big deal unless you shoot lots and lots LINK

A lot of stuff looks to be getting low or out of stock. I'm going to be at Academy at lunch - I'm going to glance at their AR section and see if it is Newton bare or Summer 2015 glut or somewhere in between.

I really don't think the shootings had too much to do with stock shortages. It's just he holidays and after the great scare there was an abundance of over stock that they had to work through. It should be pretty stable after the 1st, unless something big happens.

I think its a combination of both, but the shooting did not help. FWIW when my buddy asked me to look online for him, the night of the shooting there were over a dozen of Rugers for sub $600. By the next morning when he ordered most of the links had sold out and he bought one from Southern Shooters in Alexandria and they oversold their inventory pushing his delivery back 2 weeks.

I didn't ask, but Academy (Alexandria) has a number of ARs in the racks. So, doesn't look like there has been an acute run.

I've just noticed particular things seem to be low/out of stock as I've been researching my build.
