And then set it up and started shooting it and hunting with it. I don't know if I could have done that, but that's how he is. From what I understand these "Classics" were offered in a different caliber each year. This one is .250 savage. I don't have pics, but you guys know what a wood rem 700 looks like.

Just curious if any of you have one of these and what you think of it. My dad has been bowhunting only since the time this gun was made, but he's gotten older, and picked up rifles again this year. I think he's bought 3 since fall. I guess I get my obsessiveness from him.

I just don't understand buying/owning anything that is not used.

I'm not the type to buy something and just look at it either. But, if it's already 30+ years old and still in the box new, I'd have a hard time being the one to get it dirty.

+1. I have a hand-made jointed darter someone gave me as a gift for my wedding (insert redneck joke here). I was apprehensive about using it for 10 years or so before I put it in my tackle box. It has teeth marks on it now.

Dads money, he can do whatever he wants with it.

Safe queens don't really do much for me... One day if you where to receive this rifle how much more meaning would it have for you if you knew he used it and the two of you made hunts with it or shot it together...

Or would you rather have it nib where he never handled it or had a story tied to it...

He bought it FOR the cartridge. But, he tends to go with oddball stuff. And, let's be honest, killing whitetails in the southeast isn't really something you need to shoot 1000 yards on plane to do.

That's definitely true. What really pisses me off is the old Ithaca 20ga shotgun he used to dove hunt all through my youth was stolen. I had a lot of memories attached to that gun and always hoped it would be passed down.
