Is there anything to stop crabgrass during the south Louisiana summer? Apparently I didn't prevent during the Spring, and now I have creeping trash grass taking over the backyard.

Spray and kill large areas? If so, what do I spray? Dig up small areas?

I tried round up last year and was left with spots and weeds growing in the same place until the centipede crept back and filled it in almost a year later. Then, the crab grass came back up.

This year, I have been using one of those garden weasel tools to pull it and get the roots out(after the ground is saturated is easiest). Also I pull pull and seed heads before I mow. This left me with spots, but the centipede crept back and filled in the holes within a couple of weeks.

Noticeably less crab grass, but frick me anyway because my front yard is being taken over by torpedo grass anyway.

Condolences

Guy at the local co-op told me to get a rubber glove and wipe roundup on the blades of crabrasss. Careful not to get any on the grass around it.

Centipede

Sethoxydim and hand pulling may be the answer. Could be a good learning experience for the kids and neighborhood friends to pull.

Appreciate the feedback

I watched a video about it today on youtube.

Apparently, even if you pull it, or spray it or whatever, it's probably already dropped a few million seeds that will sit dormant until next spring.

Then you start over again, spot spraying roundup on it as it comes up, then pulling and planting scott's dead spot filler throughout the year so other weeds don't set as easily in the dead spots.

After a couple years, you win the war and you just have to do a pre-emergent each year to keep it from coming back.

According to the experts on the board, is that consistent with what you know to be true?

I'm not a expert, but that has worked for me. I nuked the crabgrass pretty bad in my back yard (St. Augustine) a few years back. The St. Aug gradually crept back over all the open spots, and now I do the pre-emergent in March and June. That seems to keep the crabgrass at bay in my St. Aug.

Now, the Virginia Buttonweed is a different story.

In bermuda, MSMA can't be beat imo.

Have never used quincorac and have no idea what it's for but 2,4D won't do anything for crab grass.

EDIT: Just did a quick search on Quinclorac. Looks like good stuff.

One potential issue, it said don't use on bermuda over 85*, gonna be in 90's. But I spot sprayed so hopefully damage will be contained.

Bermuda is pretty tough. Even when I spray MSMA I sometimes get a little yellowing where the tires of 4 wheeler passed but it doesn't ask long and bounces right back.

I spray with MSMA during the summer here in Memphis. When really hot, I just use a little less.

The whole reason I even ended up with crabgrass is because I sprayed some roundup on weeds in early April before the grass came out, but apparently it killed that bermuda anyway. Crabgrass filled in the dead spots because i was too stupid to fill them in with seed. Two really good lessons learned by a first time homeowner.

You must have mixed it pretty strong cause you can actually spray roundup at 1% and not kill bermuda. I don't recommend this but have seen it done. I've even sprayed a lot of fence lines, and I mean miles, with 24D and roundup in same tank, and not kill bermuda, but most everything else.
