Inject some antifreeze in some chicken and put it out away from your house where the coyotes hang out. Keep the dogs and cats inside for a few days.

I like that idea, and really wish I could, it would be cheap, easy, and effective. But my neighbors' dogs roam around a good bit, and even my sister's dog occasionally walks all the way over here despite living 5.5 miles away.

Does everyone keep their dogs inside at night? Another method, that won't kill instantly, and gives you the option of getting a dog to the vet is to start baiting them to an area using used cooking oil and some table scraps. Do this for 3-4 days bad in the woods. Then, at night, place out 3-4 handfuls of broken up old couch cushion about baseball size soaked in cooking oil. They'll eat it all by the next morning. Repeat for a couple weeks. Say bye bye to coyotes.

We have to keep ours inside a fence for the most part. The road we live on has a fair amount of traffic that NEVER pays attention to the speed limit. They would both be dead inside of a week if they were allowed to roam free. A big part of that is our fault, we didn't train them well as pups.

snapper sized circle hooks tied to 100# braided line baited with old meat. hang off a stout limb approx 3' off the ground. warn neighbors to keep dogs in that night!

You need to get your mind around the fact that whatever you do, you're not getting rid of your coyotes. If you have suitable habitat, you will have them. If you kill the ones you have, new ones will take their place.

If it makes you feel better, then go for it. But don't fool yourself into thinking that it is really gonna accomplish anything.

This is the truth. Coyotes are here to stay.

Don't listen to any of these idiots suggesting poison or hooks that is illegal and just flat out gay. Dont be gay.

Get you a bunch of Ferrell hogs on your property...They will run everything off. Seriously since our Hog population has exploded we are seeing and hearing fewer totes, down side is all the deer have left and the hogs have torn everything up.

Save your time with a rifle and just trap them with a foot trap. You will catch more if you do it right. Trapping season is open till end of March.

Buy a .22-250. Zero recoil and one of the best varmint cartridges available.

First off, you do realize you aren't going to be shooting coyotes at 550 yards? I would look at a ruger ranch in 223 with a brake on it. With a scope though it would still run you about 550

cut into 1 inch squares

soak in

if you aren't a hunter

or

use various animal blood

best effect is to spread around where you dispose of your pig or deer carcasses

yotes will scavenge the pile and ingest the soaked items and die.

Set up a blind and put dog food there everyday. After a few weeks sit and wait.
Move blind, rinse, repeat.

damn, that is a wall of text that you wrote there!

to answer your questions, a .22 magnum will drop a coyote like a rock and will have basically no recoil...that is what I would get. you will need to shoot them at night, so long range is not important.

for shooting, just get a predator call...you can use any portable cd, phone, or ipod with a decent speaker and a recording of a distressed rabbit or bird...all are available from any hunting supply place.

if you want to trap them, use a #2 leg hold trap and bait...the best book that I have ever seen on this is available for about ten bucks and is called "trapping north American furbearers" by Hawbacker.

FFS - $550 out the door (and even better deals are available) - for an M&P Sport II or Ruger AR556. It's the greatest buyer's market in the history of the platform.

Would something like a youth .243 do the trick?

It doesn't take much to kill yotes - but you're going to be hunting them at night, largely, so you are going to have to invest in lighting or night vision as well.

Coyotes abound, need dead, how I make dead?

Start raising large, dangerous dogs, buy a donkey and/or shoot them.

(ETA: Or, yeah, if you want to be boring and efficient, just poison/trap them.)
