Y'all ever seen one this light? I don't recall seeing a mature one this color. I thought for sure it was gonna be a water snake until I saw the head (no pics). I had my little boy so I didn't feel like messing with it further (no fire, I suck). Most I see are black.

looks like a broad banded water snake to me

a natural defense is to flatten their head (triangular shape) and appear intimidating

Pic isn't the best, but it does look like a Cottonmouth to me. I have seen mature Cottonmouths that retain a lighter color - not a lot, but they're out there.

That is a light one, for sure. I've seen photos of them that color. We don't get many black ones around here, but ours are a little darker than that.

I saw one that was light in Northwest Florida. That dude was angry and striking at everything.

Yeah I noticed that too Teague. While on the Flint last summer I saw a couple "light colored" ones...and thought maybe they were water snakes...so I got close..and they didn't behave like a water snake...and showed me that pretty mouth...Yep...an old friend. I'm from SW La..and all of ours are nearly black as coal...and stink like raw sewage.

Pic is a little better on my phone but not much...I should have taken more.

Its head was a 100% give away.

Here you can kind of see the top of its head which was black.

He'd be missing his head if I were around.

The old timers did not say that they smelled like raw sewage, but that was before the PC days

Yeah, well Dad always was mindful of us kids early on and that's who I learned that phrase from. Later it turned to more colorful term..but the raw sewage phrase stuck with me for use in a public place/forum.

What kind of response are you hoping for here? We all know that most people have silly irrational fears of snakes and kill them on sight and feel like some sort of hero for doing it. Are you wanting a congratulations? Or, maybe an argument? I know you can't think anybody is impressed that you can kill a little snake. So, I guess I'm just confused why these sort of comments are always made. Cool, you can kill a snake. Is that good?

Snapped a pic of this guy in florida a couple of years ago. They've got a subspecies that doesn't get nearly as dark.

Thats a cool picture and a neat looking snake......that light color phase reminds me of a snake that looked like a copperhead/cottonmouth cross.

I've seen a lot of lighter colored Cottonmouths, especially the farther North you go, and it creeks with good canopies. Sunlight might be an important factor, like shallow Bass scales turning darker, but I have noticed it.
