I keep getting these post on facebook saying it's legal to take the class online. Does anyone know if that is right or just BS?

I have a MS Firearms Permit. I haven't done the "enhanced" version yet, but it requires a class. A part of this class is a request number of shots you must take under the guidance of an instructor (I think it's 50). If LA's class is like this (from what I gather LA requires a class for a standard permit), then I would think you would have to shoot, which you obviously cannot from a computer. Could be wrong though.

Just check if the class, by law, requires you to actually shoot. If so, then the answer is obvious.

I would say that is BS. Here in TX, I had to take the lecture part from a certified instructor (Ft. Worth Cop) and then take a shooting part with him supervising us. Don't believe the stupid crap on Facebook.

i think here in LA you have to hit the target 36 times (meaning anywhere on the target not even in the circles just has to land on the paper) this is a requirement to pass. So I would assume taking the class online is a no go unless you could schedule a time with a certified instructor to shoot in front of.

Don't see how this can be true. If so it shouldn't be.

I haven't found any method of obtaining a concealed handgun permit in Louisiana outside of taking a course with an instructor from the Louisiana State Police Approved Instructor List.

The method of getting a permit will vary in each state so I can't comment on any others besides Louisiana.

Source: I'm on the approved instructor list.

i mean to get technical only way I could see it is if you setup a two way video conference confirmed the people who were taking the class and could see them. then at a later date set up a time to go to the range and see them shoot.

You have to hit the silhouette (NRA target) on every shot. 12 shots at 6 feet, 12 shots at 10 feet and 12 shots at 15 feet.

And there are actually people who can't do this?

If you are a Louisiana resident, and if they're referring to the entire class, it's complete BS.

There are two types of online training being touted. The first is by private companies selling online CCW classes. These are accepted by some states, but Louisiana isn't one of them.

The second online option is one that the NRA rolled out last year. The NRA calls it a "blended" course for the "Basic Pistol" curriculum (the one that is used by the vast majority of CCW instructors in this state). Under this model the CCW student takes roughly half of his "CCW" class online from the NRA (NRA charges $60), and the local instructor presents the other half (cost = whatever the instructor charges).

I'm certified to teach the NRA "Basic Pistol" curriculum, but choose to not teach it (my CCW classes are based on the NRA "Personal Protection" curriculum). That being said the NRA has been met with widespread disapproval. I'm not sure how LSP views the blended course.

It's my understanding, based on discussions with my contacts at the NRA, that the "old" NRA "Basic Pistol" curriculum will be reinstated in the next couple of months (as an option for those who don't want the "blended" version) . This will allow instructors to resume teaching the "old" Basic Pistol curriculum (where you get to learn to name the parts of a revolver, the parts of a pistol, the components of a cartridge, etc, etc.).

TL;DR version -- Don't take any online BS course for a Louisiana CCW permit.
