Just closed on our first house. We have 20 acres. Not a whole lot of "yard" but a solid acre or so to cut. Plan on putting in a garden, plow the driveway (3/10ths of a mile) and do general upkeep of the property. Anybody have any recommendations on a small tractor with real experience? Thank y'all.

30-40 horse John Deere or kubota.

I'd suggest a 100hp John Deere 5100 but likely too rich for your budget

John Deere's parts and service department is a criminal conspiracy that should see multiple high level executives sent to arse pounding Federal prison on RICO counts for the rest of their natural lives.

Get a Kubota.

Damn, you've been checking my finances?

I don't think it's the price point as much as that's a whole lotta tractor for what I'm after. Would be damn fun to work with though

The fun factor is the only reason I suggested it. It's way more than what you need

I would go with Mahindra, at least a 40hp

Kubota went with plastic fenders. Wasn't impressed

Get 4 wheel drive and a front end loader. Compacts don’t have the best traction due to how light they are. Especially when you start picking stuff up and your center of gravity starts shifting. You end up tearing your yard up needlessly.

I bought a used kubota L2800 late model after they upped the HP to 30 with hydrostatic transmission 4x4 and a loader. I couldn’t be happier. My 14 year old drives it more than me and I feel really comfortable with him on a HST.

For 20 acres I'd get a 50 hp, 4wd and front loader. Look for a good deal on a used one.

ETA. I had a little more land than that and had a JD 790 4wd and plenty of times I wished I had a bigger tractor

Most of the land won't ever see the tractor. Basically grass cutting, plowing the driveway, and tilling a garden/small food plot. Occasionally pulling logs and clearing tall brush.

I bought this one a little over 2 years ago. Use it around the house and the hunting camp. Does everything I need it to do. 4-wheel drive, front end loader, ag tires. Napa has filters too.

Rarely do you hear, " I wish I would have bought the smaller tractor". Id get the biggest you can afford and tow around. Because you'll want to be able to load it up and move it. There will be a lot more projects once you have it then you realize if you are wanting to do them.

You will use the tractor for more than what you think, and more is always better. I have a 47 Horse Kubota and love it.

For what you are saying the L series Kubota would do the trick. You can get between a 30-40 HP tractor around here with trailer and typically 2 implements for a little over 20K. That is a 4WD tractor with a bucket. Several places will have these packages for 22-25K.

I agree with the L series Kubota. Also a front end loader is a must, you will be amazed at how much you will use it!

Nothing bad to say about Mahindra, but I have two Kubota's and both have treated me very well.

Call up Leeman’s farm supply if you’re in Louisiana. They’ll set you up.

Get the mid sized kubota 40 hp hst. We use one on the deer lease and it's a great compact tractor. We also have 2 others 50+ hp we use. For your purposes the 40 hp 4x4 w loader is all you need.

I bought at the high end of the compact market size wise. I went with the Kubota L4701 hydrostatic 4wd. Think is a beast and sips fuel. Have a 6ft bush hog, front end loader and also had a third function installed for a land pride 6 ft grapple.
I would think the 3301 or 3901 would be a good fit for 20 acres.
