Colt 1911 .45 auto

I was passed down my grandfathers Army service pistol from WWII. I want to clean it and put it up. Someone told me I need a tool to take it apart. This doesn't make sense being soldiers would have to keep up with a tool during the war. Can someone give me any insight on this pistol?

Thanks

To field strip it, you don't need anything. If you want to go farther than that, I think you'll need some tools.

shouldnt need anything to field strip... if you're trying to do some super deep cleaning, you may need some tools

depending on your expierence, it might be worth it to have a gun smith clean it for you. not that you would sell it, but you dont want to ruin the value because you screwed up, from lack of expierence

As has been mentioned, field stripping for regular cleanings requires no tools.

However, I think the kind of cleaning you're looking to do will require some. As someone else mentioned, I'd have a gunsmith do the work.

$501

No tool necessary but it makes it much easier to remove the slide and spring assembly.

I think it may be worth a little more than $500 if it's in good condition. But I'll go $502

FF,
You don't need any special tools to field strip/clean a 1911, although it can be easier to remove the barrel bushing if you have that tool. Personally, I don't use that tool when I field strip my 1911's. The main thing you'll need to be wary of is what's referred to as an "idiot mark" (or scratch) that can occur if the slide lock lever is not installed correctly. I'd give you a link, but I coudn't pull it up right now. Just google "idiot mark."

There are lots of good videos on Youtube that can show you how to field strip your gun MUCH better than I can tell you.

Use a good gun cleaning oil and protectant, like Break Free CLP or Eezox. Just don't use WD40.

Thats worth another $5. Brings my total bid up to $505. I am currently looking for the tool that I am talking about but Kimber.com is being slow.

ETA: This is what I was talking about. I can break mine down with my hands but sometimes I use a quarter to help. This makes it super easy to remove the recoil spring.
Kimber Bushing Wrench
Linked from Kimber because they make the finest 1911's.

Probably talking about the little wrench for the bushing. It can be difficult to bushing off without it.

If the gun says U.S. Army on the barrel it could be worth anywhere from $8,000-$14,000 from what I have read. Also depending on what the condition of the gun is.
