Made a trip to Cocodrie yesterday and was supposed to stay till tomorrow. Fish weren't biting that good. 4 yesterday evening and 15 this morning

About 8 am I had a gaftop sink it's sail balls deep in my knuckle between my pinky and ring finger. Hurt like hell but I managed through and kept fishing. Was a little gun shy after and one of the next ones I caught I flinched so much I threw the metal grabbers in the water. A little while later I caught one and tried pulling the hook out with pliers and this bastard flopped and shoved his fin through my finger. Trying to shake him off it flopped and stabbed me in the damn leg. Needless to say I was done. Can't grip a rod and reel so headed home for some antibiotics and hope my finger doesn't fall off

Hurts way worse than it looks. First one was just as deep in my knuckle but didn't come out the other side

Lawd....we caught 25 Saturday morning, thought it was going to be a great morning after catching a keeper speck on the first cast.

As far as the catfish, friend I fish withs dad got stuck pretty bad last year while we were out at last island. It was pretty bad, after getting back to the camp and putting a hot compress on it most of the swelling went down.

As far as getting them off, I'm not a big fan of the flipper. I generally take my needle nose pliers, let the fish settle down, grab him by the mouth with the pliers, and either take the hook out by hand, or use the jaw grips to take it out. Stingrays, unless it's only lightly hooked, I cut the line.

Ouch. We have all done it at some point. Come to think of it, I don't think I know anyone who hasn't been stuck.

Being afraid of catfish, is how you get stuck by a catfish. Grab it securely like you would a spec and remove the hook. Trying to hold on to them with a pair of pliers is asking for trouble.

I'm the same way. I feel a lot more comfortable taking the hook out of a gafftop or hardhead by just holding the fish in one hand and taking the hook out with the other. They are slimy nasty critters but I feel completely in control of the situation when I don't have to rely on pliers or de-hookers.

I bet it does hurt. I stopped handling gaftops and hardheads years ago and I'm very careful flipping them. Call me a sissy, but I don't give a frick.

Caught right at 40 specks saturday morning. Tons of small fish and catfish but that's part of using live bait. I also got stuck in the thumb.

Can't really use those with a kahle hook. Like mentioned, it's much easier to just grab the hook with pliers and just shake the fish off.

Looks like you might need a single stitch to your finger. If you wait too long the ER will not stitch it up even if it needs to be stitched. The more time that passes the more bacteria enters the wound. Only fresh wounds are sutured closed.

Also buy a fishing glove.

I have to disagree. I've flipped them off of many kahle hooks.

Yea I'm not sure if I want to go to the doctor. May just clean it up real good when I get home. I've had worse but nothing that made it feel like my hand was broke

This is so stupid. I'm willing to be it's how you ended up with this...

Grab the fish with your hands, not with your skirt. Remove the hook, throw fish back in the water.
