I've been deer hunting out of ladder stands, tripods, and box stands my entire life on our lease and recently started bow hunting this past year. I wanna get a climber to be able to get to places we don't have permanent stand.

In your opinion what's the best climber for the $?

I like the design and durability/dependability of the Ol' Man brand. I know there are other good ones, but I like those. I think I have the Vision

I have an API Grand Slam, but my next one will probably be an Ol' Man because they are much easier and quieter setting up and taking down

I have the Summit Titan. Its the same footpiece as the Viper but the seat part is wider. Gives you more room when your wearing alot of clothes. It is the most comfortable stand i've ever sat in. Several times during the season I bring and empty milk jug to piss, some drinks and a sandwich, and sit all day with no problems.

I do too, but you have to sharpen the blades to be safe.

Found a good deal on an Ameristep. Is it worth the cheap price or what?

Ol Mans don't feel very safe at all. Just my opinion but I prefer summits.

I wouldn't get something you have to trust your life on because it is cheap. Sort of like buying the cheapest scaffolding to work 10 stories up

I have an API Grand Slam Lite. I have had it for about 10 years. If I were to get a new one, I think I would get a Summit.

I have a grand Ol'man. It works well and has lasted me over a decade, but....

I hate climbers now though. I absolutely cannot stand the weight of the sumbitch walking in and out of the woods. They are uncomfortable on your back as well. Also try it with a harness on as well.

It's impossible for me to carry a climber, a backpack, and a bow/rifle in without being drenched in sweat and huffing by the time I get settled in the tree. Even in 21 degrees as proven this season. I feel like everything within 10 miles knows I'm walking in the woods with all this damn gear. It literally stresses me out.

I am in great shape BTW, so it's not like a KR situation.

I'd buy 2-3 lock ons over one l climber anyday now. I can walk in with my pack and my weapon on a leisurely stroll, climb up and sit and be comfy in about 5 minutes.

Currently using a API Grand Slam. Comfortable and very secure.

Decided to go with a Summit Titan for a second climber next year.

I checked out an ol man and while lite and easier to set up did not feel as secure or comfortable as the API or Summit climbers.

Lock-ons and climbing sticks. Can climb any tree, not just straight ones without limbs.

ETA: can put several lock-ons out, and just pack in your sticks to climb into whichever stand you're going to hunt.

I have owned a few different types (Ole man, Ameristep, API, Summit, a few other off brands)

I think Summit or API are your best two options. I'd suggest checking if any of your hunting buddies have one and climb a tree with it and see how it feels.

From everyone's opinion it looks like it's down between the summit and API

This all day long. I buy the Academy lock ons

And pair it with some Big Game Stagger Steps from Cabelas. Ratchet strap it all together and put some shoulder straps on it. Not any more heavy than a climber and much more versatile. This whole setup will cost about $100. You can upgrade to lone wolf or other more expensive models and it will be lighter and more comfortable, but this works for me.

I rarely hunt out of a climber, but I have a Summit Viper and I like it a lot. I cut the front rail off so I can shoot with my bow sitting down, and I use it as a hand climber now instead of a sit down/stand up climber. Super comfortable. I've read about some of the newer ones breaking at the base of the bottom section, but mine is several years old and I've had no problems.

Wear a harness.

I welded two 1/2" teeth on each blade to bite into the tree better.

I have hunted almost exclusively out of an Ol Man for 20 yrs. I've had other stands, and my 3 Ol Man stands are my personal favorite. I can get in and get up with very minimal noise in complete darkness without a light. I think familiarity with whatever your stand choice is may be more important that the actual stand.

Something like this.
