Hi all. I'm going to be participating in a clay shoot tournament here pretty soon and it will be my first time. I thought I'd come here to get some pointers as I haven't shot clay since I was a child. I grew up shooting a 12 gauge all day in the back yard and I duck hunt every year and have no problem hitting ducks. Am I still likely going to embarrass myself at this competition? Any pointers? TIA.

Is it a Sporting Clays or skeet match? Doesn't matter really except that you will know where the skeet are coming from. The best warmup for that would be going to a range and shooting some skeet. In the BR area, you can go to Hunters Run across the river in Port Allen and pay to shoot. You don't have to be a member to shoot skeet. Main thing is to know your leads and keep the gun moving after you shoot. Have fun! I love shooting sporting clays.

Are skeet matches limited to the flying variety? Because this competition will have the imitation rabbits too. I'm kind of tied up until the event so I'm probably just going to end up winging it and hope there are no spectators aside from my disappointed teammates

shooting skeet is a whole lot different than shooting ducks. maybe more like shooting doves. and the rabbit is too surprising to hit the little bastard.

Rabbit would be sporting clays. It's the most fun imo. Don't worry about your score, there will almost certainly be people worse than you. It's a good time we there you hit 5 or 50.

Yes, as Dave said, a running rabbit would be Sporting Clays. It is a lot more fun to me than skeet. To me it's like shooting golf. You get a different look on each station and the clays come from different directions. I also agree with Dave that if you have any experience shooting moving targets at all, you won't be the worst one there. Do you know where the tourney will be?

That's reassuring that I won't be the worst one there. I'd prefer not to disclose the location as it's associated with my job. Out of 100 clays, how many should I feel good about hitting?

The reason I was asking where is because in the BR area, the only 2 places I know of that shoot Sporting Clays are Riverside, which is north of Denham Springs, and Hunters Run across the river and they are drastically different.

For a first timer, 50% would be a good score.

Ha, me and Civiltiger have been going about every other week for almost a year. Last week I almost tied my lowest score ever. Some days you have it and some days you don't.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and confidence-boosters. I hit 65 clays out of 108. I loved it and will definitely look to go back more often.
