I have a 83 CJ7 with chronic carburetor problems. I've had two mechanics so far to fix it but to no success. It must be a lost art to work on a carburetor. It's hard as hell to crank first time of the day. Need starting spray to get it started. Then under way it randomly bogs down as if not getting fuel. Filters and pumps are all fine.

I'm in BR. Any recs on a good mechanic?

You have an intake leak.

The guys at Searchers can help you though.

While vacuum leaks are common with that monstrosity of an intake, could also be a mis-adjusted choke if its cold starts giving you trouble. Porosu casting in the carb leaking fuel overnight is on the list too. Rochester Q-jets were notorious for that, but anything cast in aluminum can do it

Give us some information on the engine and the carb. I think most came with the 258 engine and the Carter BBD carb. Is that what you have?

any man over 50 can fix a carb. Heck that is all that had when I was growing up.

Just find an older mechanic- where do you live?

Change dem jets, baw

Eta- check to see if Demon makes carbs for it, I'm pretty sure they used to and those jets are easy as all get up to change

If you are sure it is the carb , buy a kit and rebuild it. IF that is out of your wheel house, buy a rebuilt carb and install it- if that is out of your wheel house

Then yes found an older wrench and he will get you running.

It's an inline 6. 258 I believe. Don't know what carb is on it but I think it's original. I don't know dick about carbs so I would like a mechanic rec in BR that knows what is going on.
TIA

is it the stock carter?
What are the symptoms? stumble, stall, flood, etc.
What adjustments have you made? idle, mixture, float level
if you dont want to rebuild it, drop a Weber 38/38 on it

The Tremec T-176 is a decent transmission, but only medium duty.

The T-4's and T-5's are light duty and pretty much suck.

You are most likely having a choke issue, for the summer tie the choke open with a piece of string or wire. It may be hard to start but will not give you the bogs anymore. Before winter replace the carb, some like the weber, I would look into changing the intake or getting an adapter and going holley. JMHO
