Without having to get a federal license for a fully automatic weapon of any kind, what readily available rifle would you get for these situations and why?

I don't hunt, but a man ought to own at least a mid/long range rifle, a shotgun and a pistol. I'm now in the market to throw down and get a rifle. Suggestions to help me prepare myself for obviously probable events?

Well, like I said. A man ought to own at least all 3 of those types of firearms... Just looking for a good excuse to get my butt in gear and buy one. Don't ever hunt, so that really is less important in terms of the choice here.

The AK is the one I figured would get the most votes.

.22 ammo will be the most plentiful and you can carry a lot of it in case of a Zombie Hord approching. So I would say any weapon that shoots that caliber would suit me fine. Any foreign invasion I will be grabbing an AR.

AR15 - plentiful ammo and supplies from our military.

The only practical use of a fully automatic rifle is for suppressing fire when mobilizing from different positions. Besides that, semi auto all the way - more accurate, less spent ammo, better follow-up shots.

I have a Ruger Mini-14. Shoots .223 cal. Great zombie gun. Shoots fast and straight with hardly any recoil.

Well it's really personal preference between AR and AK. People will argue it to the grave, but both are good choices.

Ideally, I would like a piston AR, that way it retains the reliability and maintains a cleaner bolt than a DI one. But, the parts wouldn't be as interchangeable as the standard DI ones since that's what the military uses.

In a SHTF/NROL situation, you have to think what would be most readily available, not what looks coolest. Beretta 92s, Glocks, AR15s, M1As would all be great weapons since there are plentiful supplies for them. Add that to the fact that the military supplies all 3 of those calibers and you've got yourself a winner.

i dig that ruger. looking real forward to having time to go back over this and check out suggestions. i just want something i know can take some abuse and keep ticking, that fires straight and can do the job with any killable thing.

ARs are like legos, you can mix and match, build and disassemble, while you are waiting for the zombies to attack...

AR. Many of the reasons are specific to me and my circumstances, but some would apply no matter what. Overall, my own familiarity with the platform and the versatility.
