I'm looking for recommendations for a cheap backup shotgun. Preferably a pump. It needs to be 12 gauge and chambered for 3.5in shells. I already have a semiautomatic that I use for duck hunting mostly, but I'm looking for something that can take a good beating.

When I say cheap, I'm talking Winchester, Stoeger, Remington, Mossberg, etc. They all have mixed reviews. Some say they work great, some say they wouldn't chamber properly right out of the box. Do any of you have personal experiences that may persuade me one way or another?

I know the whole "you get what you pay for", but I'm not looking to spend 1k on a gun that I'll only be using on nasty marsh hunts, and the occasional goose hunt (which is why I want a 3.5in chamber).

What would you guys recommend?

Mossberg 835.

I've used it as a paddle before.

I think you can get a Rem 870 pump at Walmart for $300. In pawn shops for $200.

The Green Berets used them on LRP patrols in the jungles of Asia 50 years ago. They've held up ever since. Classic, simple design.

Honestly your best answer is an over under. Semi autos and pumps have alot more moving parts that can be affected by mud and water. Over unders can take a bit more of a beating without risk of jamming. I know they are typically more expensive, but just make sure you clean it after each hunt. DOesnt take long to clean them.

There is a difference between the high quality 870s of the past and the new $300 walmart 870s

I've heard this as well. I had an old one from back in highschool and I sold it a few years back when I bought my semiauto, and I've regretted it ever since. But I hear bad things about the walmart/academy 870s. Which is why I started this thread.

870, it's a boat paddle, pry bar, depth finder. Still goes bang.

I've had my Benelli Nova pump for 15 years. Turned it into my turkey gun bout 5 years back. Would buy another one in a heartbeat.

I've been looking hard at these.

They shoot 3.5in or is that just the supernova?

The nova shoots 3.5. Thenonly difference with the supernova is the fancy stock and chokes it comes with.

Everyone saying they've used their 870 and mossbeegs as paddles.

shite I use my sbe as a paddle regularly

Not really a beater more of a middle of the road gun. But the Stoeger M3500 is kind of a beast

Yeah my brother has one as backup gun, and its awful, it fails to extract spent shells 50% of the time or more.

This is what you want. I swear you can't kill this gun. Was recommended to me by a guide at Venice Marina several years ago. I have a SBE also but will never get rid of the 835.
I also have used it for a paddle.

I think I'm leaning towards this. $400 and it'll probably last me forever considering the amount of use it will get.

The academy across town has what I'm looking for in stock, so I may go pick it up tonight.
