I have a poulan (I know, I know) 42cc 18" chainsaw. It is about 8 years old.

The other day I could no longer get it to stay running at full speed. It would bog down and die. I noticed there would be no fuel in the primer bulb. Upon investigation I found my fuel lines were shot so I replaced all lines on it.

Well it is running alot better since then, so Istarted cutting again. The issue now is that it will be cutting and start to bog down. I will pull the saw out and remove my hand from the throttle and it will do one of two things.

Either

1. Rev up even higher than full throttle and then die.

2. Continue to bog down and then die.

Ihave attempted to tune up the carb. I have the low speed idling good, and the high speed just a little richer than full rpm.

There is also a adjustment screw marked T which I cannot figure out what it does.

Any help with tuning would be appreciated

I'm thinking of mounting a handcrank to the chain and bar

That is the trotted switch. It regulates how much fuel the throttle pumps in when pulled. Make sure your throttle springs in the handle are still good and check the cable around the carb. I have the exact chain saw as you but it's a month old and out the box the throttle cable jumped off track. Also the trigger would pull the cable and rubber protector and not release. I had to zip tie the cave in the saw housing
I'm fixing my craftsman which has the same file issues as yours (little to no fuel in bulb and dying) I have a new carb and gas lines are good. Next step check the file filters in the gas tank

Yea, the new filters and lines made a world of difference. But man they were a pain in the arse to get those lines routed and through the holes

It's running lean or you have an air leak. Good way to burn a piston or lean seize the engine. Clean carb and look closely at the high speed jet. The old fuel line crap is probably in the carb.

Stihl? No. Toss it and get a Husqvarna 460.

sounds to me like a fuel problem...are you sure you don't have a stopped up fuel or air filter?

also, may be bad fuel or residue in the carb...

Its a new filter for fuel and air. Soaked the carb and blew it out with air. Might be something left in a jet though

in this case, I would guess that you are ok....sure does sound like it is running out of fuel to me, though.

have you pulled the spark plug to see what color it is?....

That is your problem their.

They last about 3 years till they start giving you problems. For some reason, I tried rebuilding the carb with no luck many times in the pass. Still ran like crap after.

I do feel blessed that this one lasted 8 years. But now I expect it to explode at any minute

So you've changed fuel lines, filters, cleaned the carb and it still won't run properly? You're probably getting close to spending what you paid for it trying to fix it. Just toss it and get a Husqvarna. Use ethanol free gas with a stabilizer and you will never have an issue.

You can get a new carb from amazon or ebay for less than $20 shipped. The cost of the new carb may exceed the value of the saw

Amazon

ebay

Verify that carb fits your Poulan model #. If not the correct one should be about the same price.

That's solid advice right there.

I got tired of tinkering with my old weed eater and it working about 1/2 the time. I ordered a new carb for $18 from Amazon, shipped. Going on 2 years now trouble free.

I figure 18 bucks every couple of years ain't a bad deal.
