Chainsaw for Cypress Knees?

I'm tired of tripping over knees in my front yard. They're all barely above or even with the top of the grass because my lawnmower shaves the tops of them off.
Can I use a chainsaw and cut them down further without hurting the tree?

Yes, but you don't want to be digging holes with a saw chain. Use a pick axe

you'll do more damage to your saw than the trees.

Not a bad idea. Though, my dumb arse will miss the root and introduce that axe to my shin. Of course, the chainsaw might not be too forgiving either.

I had a drunk buddy do that when we were younger. For some reason, he decided he wanted to open the bottom of a 55 gal drum with a pick axe. About 2 minutes aft we told him he was gonna hit himself, he opened up a huge gash down to the bone

I usually go around my yard once a year with a pickax and get all of the new knees popping up. I had a huge one in my yard when i first moved in that required me digging down around each side of it and cutting it out with a chainsaw. Usually one swing of the pickax on each side of the knee with do the trick.

Sawzall
This. clear a little bit of soil from around the knee and cut them below ground level.
