I have a Stihl Farm Boss saw, 18 " bar, over 15 years old. Decided it was time for a new one. Go to my dealer, he sells me a new Stihl, slightly smaller engine with an 18" bar. Looks a little smaller but an 18" bar is an 18" bar right?. Get home and do a side by side comparison and sure enough, the new bar is 2" shorter! Both bars say 18". Go back to dealer with both saws. He really has no answer. He shows me a pro model with a 20" bar and it's too big for me, actually 4" longer than the new 18" bar. What's up with this crap?

What's wrong with old one? If it has good compression. Go through the fuel system, get a new chain/bar and it will be a better saw than the new one with the CARB compliant shite.

Runs ok. Things were starting to break more frequently. Needed a little more reliable machine. Rope recoil crapped out , I thought, it's time for a new one.

You are gonna feel foolish doing it, but I would call Stihl corporation and ask them about it....

Dealer won't just swap you out for a regular 18? I never had size differences with the ES bars

Never heard of that, but if I can give a small word of advice I would go with a 20" bar. Your back will thank you later I promise. Especially if you are cutting up limbs and trees that are on the ground.

Both stihl bars? Some bars are a bit oval (arched). I'd expect it to be measured by the bar length, but they take a longer chain. Perhaps it's by equivalent bar length if it's arched? This interest me so please post when you find out.

Yes, both Stihl bars, both had 18" stamped on the side. Just to be clear, my old saw had 18" of cutting clearance. The new one had just slightly over 16". I think the difference was my old saw was a mid-grade model (Farm Boss) and the new saw was a homeowner grade model (MS 250).. my dealer took back the new saw and I got a new mid-grade model, 290 or 291 with a 20"bar and it's actually 20"long too!

Stihl farm saws where 029's and 039's, mid-grade models. New ones are MS271's. Dealer was pretty shady trying to sell you a smaller saw to replace a 029.

I have a 20" MS-261 and while I love how it cuts it can be a bitch to start. If it floods you can let it sit for an hour.

I also have the HT-101 pole saw that extends to 12' and it is an absolute beast with no problem starting.

My wife has a little Echo 18" that she likes because it starts and is light. Next one I buy will be a Husqvarna just because I've never had one and everyone I know that does loves them.

Something I learned from Katrina..... Get odd sized bars if you need parts. 18" is the most common size and 20" is next. Those will run out first. you can get a bigger saw and run a smaller bar but hard to do the opposite.

My old saw was over 15 years old and getting where something was breaking every time I used it. Needed more reliability. Want to buy my old one? I'll make you a deal!

The recoil on a 025 is usually a $3 fix, it has a plastic dog and most weekend warrior types will improperly start a saw and kill the recoil.

If you bought a MS290/291 you now own the biggest turd of a saw ever built. Oh sure they will start and run but for the power to weight ratio it's about the worst of anything out there right now.

If anyone is looking at a new saw of that size take a look at the Echo 590, it's a pro grade saw for home owner price.

BTW, I race Husky's so I've been around a saw or two
