Anyone have any pointers on fishing for catfish with wooden slat traps?

Ive done this for years. You can catch ALOT of fish in them. They need to be in moving water and the nastiest, stinkiest and stickiest cheese you can find is the best bait. Pack the cheese under the throat all the way up to the gap in the slats and make sure it on the bottom. Throat goes down current, of course. If the traps are new they'll need to be soaked until they sink on there on. Sometimes they need to soak long enough to turn dark in color before the fish really go in them.

dragboat is right on
if you are making/buying new traps you are going to need to soak them in a pond or similar for a few weeks at least, probably longer

i never could get fish into a new trap

Have a little patience with them. Once they turn dark, pick your spots and let them fish for 3 days during the summer. Whatever fish you catch will probably die after that. I leave mine down for a week during the cool months. Move them around if you don't catch. Once they do make some room in your freezer. Good luck

Caney lake would not be my first choice for them. You would probably do better fishing Darbonne creek/"little Darbonne"

You are probably right about Caney..the jet ski's don't generate enough current for catfish traps

Without knowing a thing about Caney Lake, I would agree.

Definitely need a current for them to work. At least in my experience. I think Wick catches in a canal along his property. I assume there is some water movement in it.
